Thwart ideas?
For my racing canoe I'm looking for some ideas to make my thwarts. I want to make them as light as possible, but strong enough. Because I'm gonna cover the mid-section of the canoe with Ceconite, I thought to bend them a little bit, so the water don't drip that much in the boat. For the moment my id...

Re: How to lay the fiberglass?
Thank you Brian, for the manual you've writed down :-) I didn't know you can sand the first layer epoxy (the complete hull) without touching the glass. Sounds risky but you have the experience, so I follow your advice. Maybe in the same line of my previous question: when laying the bias strips? My i...

Re: How to lay the fiberglass?
Thanks! So, an overlap at the keelline looks the best solution. Some say to lay both cloth (with an overlap) on the hull and wet them at the same time. I can follow the advice of Cruiser, but I read in a lot of posts that wet in wet gives a stronger bond, so maybe first I do a test to see what works...

How to lay the fiberglass?
My racing canoe is completely stripped and sanded, so it's time for the fiberglassing. I've ordered 4 oz S-glass Aerlite, De widest fabric you can find here in Europe is 77 cm (30 inch), so not wide enough to cover the complete hull in 1 time. I have 2 options in mind: I center the fabric in middle ...

Re: Hand beveling
I use 3/16" strips because I build a racing canoe with a specific hull design, and with this thinner strips it's easier to take some 'strange' turns...

Re: Hand beveling
No B&C because this time I work with very thin strips, so the gaps are not that big, but I was wondering if I could avoid these small gaps to beveling the strips.

Hand beveling
I've just started to build my second canoe, and this time I want to make them without B&C so just beveling the strips. It's very difficult to find instructions how to do that. I hope here on the forum there are some builders who can help me in this process.

Re: Is that the minimum weight?
Thanks a lot for your feedback! My 'first' experience with the 2.8 oz fiberglass was a difficult one. Because the fabric was not wide enough, I couldn't use it in the length but I worked in strokes from gunwale to gunwale with an overlap of 4 inch. The problem was when I put the epoxy on it, at the ...

Is that the minimum weight?
Today I finished my first stripper, a racing C1 canoe (17 ft long). When I weight the boat, I was a little bit disapointed with the 16 kg (35 lbs). During the whole building process I was trying to keep the weight low. Strips: 4,8 mm, Outside: 4 oz fiberglass and 3 layers epoxy, Inside: 2,8 oz fiber...

Re: Sanding Epoxy inside hull
Thanks Brian. For the extra strength I can use a 4oz bias in bow and stern. When I put the second layer fiberglass (from footbar to seat), is it a good idea to lay them in an angle (45°) to give it 'extra' strength? Is there a good trick to avoid the feathering of the glass when you apply epoxy. Som...
