Re: I have been remiss

Very close Jim.

Two Rob Roys and a Ranger.

Back from another weekend canoeing and fishing. I found the secret - let the wife catch the fish.

I have been remiss

Finished the latest one last winter but never posted any pictures. I have been putting them to use! I had my daughters up from Texas along with their boyfriends and took them out to many of the fine places to canoe around here. Everywhere from johnson lake ( https://www.google.ca/url?sa=i&rct=j&...

Bidarka

As I come closer to finishing the latest canoe, I am already starting to think about the next. I have always built canoes. 40 years ago it was a 18 foot micmac freighter, but I don't get stronger each year. I was walking through mountain equipment coop the other day looking at all the kayaks. $4300 ...

Re: Western Red Cedar

Well I am the lucky guy. I live in the land of WRC. I buy 5/4 deck panels - clear up to 20 foot. Personally I like the the full one inch widths. Now realizing that this is not the norm for most people sourcing cedar I would like to point out that I most like looking for tones. Clear wood is nice and...

Re: My "Prospecter Ranger" build

Nice decks. The last two canoes I built were done in production mode, completed in a few months. The current one is a Ranger and well, it is going slowly. I too am adding some big decks, but with a bulkhead and a deck plate. Need to have it completed by June 15th as the daugthers are arriving from T...

Re: Fairing the inner hull.

Howdy Been offline for a while - finishing that Ranger canoe. Anyways, I use a Richards paint scraper. I take the flat blade over to my bench grinder and give it a curve. Works very well for the first rough leveling. When sharp it slices the cedar like a plane. I end up with nice shavings. The glue ...

Re: amount of resin

Well I can tell you that the amount I used on my first canoe was more than I used on the next and that was more than I used on the next.... You will have some waste the first time you glass something as big as a canoe. Also, be prepared for something to not go right. For me it was on my second when ...

Re: cut strips from deck boards?

I am on my third canoe since last May. I tend to do things when I do them. Current build is a Ranger also. I have so far used deck planks for all of them. Specifically 5/4 by 6 clear. My source of cedar is unfortunately 3 hours drive away. Though I live in the heart of WRC country, I can find nowher...

Re: Rob Roy

I built two of them last year. I mounted my seats to the bottom with epoxy and a support in the middle. Here is a picture of the finished canoe showing the seat location and the back support. http://buildersforum.bearmountainboats.com/download/file.php?id=225&mode=view I used a simple seat based...

Re: Quantity of materials (Canoe Ranger 15)

God kveld!

Also, if you can, it is best if you can find boards that have grain that look like this:

The strips you make will be easier to work with.

Re: Quantity of materials (Canoe Ranger 15)

God dag Tomkis, Regarding the dimensions of the wood, 6mm will be fine for the thickness. That is the size I use. I also use 25 mm width but you may find that it is hard to work with when bending it around parts of the canoe. 20 mm will be easier to work with. If you have a planner you can reduce th...

Re: My "Prospecter Ranger" build

She is a beauty. Have you had her out yet? I am thinking to start a Ranger in a few weeks myself. I need another two seats for when the kids come back next summer and thought the Ranger would be a good one.

Next!

Well the weather turned cold here about 4 weeks back so no more canoeing for the year. That lead to me finishing the second Rob Roy up and well start thinking about the next. Here are some pics of the second Roby. IMG_20151110_160947.jpg IMG_20151118_181221.jpg IMG_20151118_181320.jpg I see a fair b...
