Re: Stem questions - with pictures!
Hey ptsmith, I'm certainly to expert in the art of canoe building, but have just successfully completed my first build. Personally I don't think it matters one bit whether you use 1/8 or 1/4 inch think strips for the stem as long as you get the the correct dimensions in the end. As for the split in ...

Re: Strips not aligned at stem
I wouldn't stress it to much unless your using a feature strip that will be very noticeable. The cedar will all sort of blend together anyway and wont be very obvious. If your foot ball is going to have a feature then I would do as mentioned above and taper one or two of the strips to get things bac...

Stem Caps
Just wondering if anyone has ever made some sort of metal cap to go over the stem and gunwales. Ive been wanting to do it but struggle to come up with a plan/

To router or not to router
Just pondering over the idea of using a round over bit on on inwales and outwales before I finish the canoe. I have already broken the edge with a spoke shave and sand paper... Just I little hesitant to take a power tool to it ie..tear out is a big fear. Any ideas of how to get the best edge on the ...

Re: Screw Gunnals?
Thanks JIm! That was my original thought as well then I got thinking and thought I would check with the experienced builders on here :tu . I did use screws at the gunwale where it has a major swoop towards the stem because there was no way to clamp there and there was some major bending pressure. Th...

Screw Gunnals?
Hey all, I'm back at the build after a long break mostly due to frustration.. I have FINALLY and successfully installed both inwales and outwales and am looking for a little advice. When it comes to the outwales should I be concerned that I never used screws to attach the outwales to the hull? I had...

Re: Inwale Install??!
Thanks all, I really do appreciate the responses. I hopefully now have what I need to go forward with this project. I was originally using walnut for my trim but was having a hell of a time getting it to bend without snapping. The oak should bend better but will be heaiver than some other woods. Tha...

Inwale Install??!
Hey Everyone, I have hit a major road block in this canoe build and am really going crazy over it. The time has come for me to install the inwales and have had many failed attempts. I have scarf jointed two 8 foot oak boards together and milled them to 3/4 inch thickness through the thickness planer...

Re: Tapered Inwales
Thanks Denis, I was 90 percent sure that was the case. Thanks for clearing that up. I just hope the swoop at the stern and bow is manageable without the need for steaming.. Ive already epoxied the scupples(sp?) in place and dont know how well epoxy take to steaming.

Tapered Inwales
I know canoecraft says to taper the hull side of the inwale... This meaning the side that gets epoxied to the hull.. or the other side?
Thanks

Re: Bulkhead Install
Thanks both Jim and Patricks dad, I am going to give these bulkheads a go over the weekend when I can find the time. Jim, Ive noticed the the bulkhead in the attached pictures angles toward to inner stem, Which is something I hadn't thought about. I was thinking I would install on the vertical using...

Re: Bulkhead Install
Thanks Patricks Dad, When you say use a layer of glass to install, do you mean position the bulkhead in place and glass the bulkhead to the inside hull of the canoe? Or should I glass the bulkhead first and then position it in place and use a strip of glass around the bulkhead to the hull? Doing eit...
