I bought a new Rigid variable speed ROS when I started my boat. The thing was great and VERY comfortable...........for the three hours it lasted before the speed control board went phewt. No problem, Home Depot exchanged it promptly, and the second one lasted 20 minutes. I paid the extra 20 bucks fo...

The dremel bit has a pilot, it's just not brass. My gunnels aren't scuppered, but I did use the bit to round over all the corners on the gunnels and decks. No problems.

Dremel makes a 1/8" corner round bit - #615. I got mine from Home Depot.

Want to varnish

Does temperature and humidity effect the application of spar varnish? I've got Epifanes high gloss. The daytime temps have been in the low 30's (high 80's for the 'f' scale) with about 3000% humidity. If it's unwise to varnish in these conditions, what about late in the evening? As always, all advic...

Seat Position

I know there has been a lot of discussion on this subject recently, but I'm not 100% comfortable with it yet. In the second edition of CanoeCraft, the Prospector seat positions look like about 40" for the bow seat and 50" for the stern seat. I outweigh my wife by 50 pounds, and usually tak...

A couple of questions:

When sealing the trim with epoxy, do you wipe on thin coats with a rag, or brush it on?

For rawhide laced seats, should the rawhide be varnished or oiled?

Thanks, guys. Bernstrom lace it is. I am going to go with 3/16" lace spaced approx. 3/4" apart. I have just about completed the spring honey-do list, and am aching to get back at the canoe.

rawhide lacing

I've heard a few stories of guys buying rawhide lacing over the internet and getting lacing of ununiform width and/or thickness. Has anyone purchased rawhide lacing from Cariboucry, and what is their quality like?

I am working on a Bear Mountain Prospector.

The inside got a wetout coat, and then life got in the way of continuing.
I'll hopefully get back to it this week. I didn't really want to have to sand at all between coats. Oh, well.

I've got the seat frames and gunnels roughed out.

Joble I did the same thing as Dean, but with a laser level positioned about six feet from one end of the strongback and fastened to the ceiling (10 ft) shooting a vertical line. After making sure the projected line on the far wall was perfectly plumb, I set the strong back center line to it, and the...

Can you make your own bedding coumpound?
Can you use thickened epoxy to just glue it on?
