Rudder - installing in finished kayak

So I finished a Reliance 20'8" tandem about three yrs ago and chose not to install a rudder. Realizing that it's darn hard to steer that sucker in any wind, even on our small lake. Is it possible to add rudder to a finished kayak with a sealed deck?

Re: Outer stem protector

Can anyone advise on the method of putting on brass protector or give me a reference? I don't see it described in Ted Moore's Kayakcraft. Will likely start with extra glass as you all commented on.

Re: Coaming material thickness

KenC,
Good to know. I did find some 1/8" Lauan locally, and man is it thin and persnickety to use. I've managed to make a few layers but it's tedious and I'm not loving this part of the build. Oh well. I may check out Nick Schade's method now.

Re: Coaming material thickness

KenC
Thanks - I'm using Kayakcraft book by Ted Moores. Maybe I misread it - thought they said Luan plywood 1/8" or hardwood. Actually having trouble finding 1/8" Luan anyhow.
I do have some leftover 1/4" cedar strips though - that's a good idea. You sure have a sweet looking boat in the picture.

Re: Outer stem protector

Thanks Brian
Will be entering and exiting from dock, so I think I'll just use glass and wait to add brass if needed later. Thanks for the wise advice.

Coaming material thickness

First time kayak builder...
Wondering whether I can use 1/4" plywood for coaming. Has anyone tried thickness other than 1/8"?

Outer stem protector

First time kayak builder- very exciting! I've read about brass protectors for outer stems, but wondering if it's necessary. Appreciate any advice.
