Re: Advice needed - Fiberglass/Epoxy shaping and filling(?)

Sedges, I planned to use some scrap 6oz cloth from my original lay-up to patch these spots, by stealing from the remaining cloth to be used on the inside... I'm nervous about taking any from the reserves, though... nervous I'll drape it in the hull and realize I took too much! Do you have any good s...

Re: Advice needed - Fiberglass/Epoxy shaping and filling(?)

Gentlemen, I've spent the evening working the hull flatter with a sanding board, and carbide scraper, and I think it's time to check-in. The area of concern is much flatter, and only a handful of problematic areas remain. Much of the "waviness" is reduced to the area that will be covered b...

Re: Advice needed - Fiberglass/Epoxy shaping and filling(?)

Gosh, you guys are super helpful. Thank you. Brian, your pictures are selling it. It sounds like the right way to do it is to sand/scrape it flat, and cover the area with another layer of glass. Could you guys help me by reviewing the process? Keep in mind, this is much of the length of the boat, ab...

Advice needed - Fiberglass/Epoxy shaping and filling(?)

Hello, Builders! I am happy to say I've finally made it past fiberglassing day...after two years...and it's only the outside. But, overall, I'm pleased with the results, and very proud! One of my positive affirmations, as my father and I worked through the day, was "we're going to make a few mi...

Re: Strip Gaps and Glue Signs

Thanks, everyone, for the very good advice. I stopped using the steel wool, and the dark grey/black color went away completely. Unfortunately, there are black lines between the first strips on each side... :crying

Strip Gaps and Glue Signs

Hello, Canoe Builders! I've been working on my Freedom 17 off and on for over a year... Job changes... a baby... life... you know? Anyway, I've finally started stripping the hull a couple weeks ago. I've gotten 8 strips on each side, and I'm thinking it's time for a status check as I've noticed a co...

Re: My "Prospecter Ranger" build

Brooks, SUPER impressed with the build - top notch work. I was pouring through some topics as an outcome of a search for stapleless advice and came across your post. There are several shots shown in your video that I had to pause and learn from... What I stared at longest were your decks - 1) becaus...

Re: Stem questions - with pictures!

GENTS - Just (FINALLY!) popped bow stems 2.0 off the mold and they're light years better. Plus, while still messy and frustrating at times, the process was a lot more enjoyable. Thanks for your advice. I used bits and pieces from all of your input! Main changes from first attempt: -Used 1/4" th...

Re: Stem questions - with pictures!

Me ? I'd probably make another, inner stem. And chock the first one up to experience. This is mainly what I needed to hear. And: Finally, the canoe will be the sum of each step ... all mistakes or fixes remain and accumulate ... redo the stems and get them the way you want them, you won't regret ta...

Stem questions - with pictures!

Hello, builders! I've been slowly progressing through my first canoe build - a Freedom 17, following Canoecraft. Between the book, this forum, and a few key builders' pages, there's plenty of info on what to do/not to do, etc. However, the wealth of info can be overwhelming, and I'm concerned I may ...
