John,

I put off building my canoe for about 30 years! I kept saying someday I will build a canoe, but nothing happened until I started working on it. I kept at it and now I have a hand-made canoe of my own to enjoy.

Just get to it!

Steve,

A utility knife works very well. Like has been said, make your cut proud of the mark so you can plane it even with the gunwales later on.

Cut from end to middle.

Andy,

You are correct about the concave bit. The Prospector has a little "cheek" to it at the bow and stern and it is slightly concave at that part of the hull.

Ed and Glen have given you great advice also! Keep asking questions and you'll do fine.

Very nice job Tom!

As a Prospector builder and paddler, I feel your excitement. You will really enjoy "The Whisper" for a long time to come.

Andy, Ditto to what Ed said. This will become especially apparent when you start filling in the sheer of the cnaoe at each end. You will want some "extra" at those stations. The middle of the canoe you can get by without it, but if you have a choice from the start, then leave a couple inch...

Andy, Welcome! I love my Prospector! I did the exact thing Glen warned you about when I started. I cut my sheet goods in half and then I paid more attention. The help on this forum is priceless! The only stupid question is that one not asked. Trust me, we have made most of the mistakes at least once...

Mike,

Great idea! It is always interesting to see what people can do when they want to. I will file that little tid-bit away for future use.

Stovetop. Welcome to the forum. The mold cutting process is just one of many steps that go into your finished canoe. You should take care to get the molds as precise as possible, but it is definately something that anyone seriously contemplating building a canoe is capable of. It is also very reward...

Mike, I cut my gunwales on the sides facing the hull. I drew a line where I wanted my taper, then clamped some scrap to either side(top and bottom) using drywall screws to squeeze it al together with the piece to be cut off sticking out the side. The scrap pieces slide against the fence on the table...

Ed,

Fantastic job! You also did an excellent job of documenting your building process. Your photo's are a great asset to the builders on this board.

I hope you enjoy using your canoe as much as you did building it.

Woody, Yes it is tippy, at first. I know how you feel. I have a 16' Prospector as well. She is definately a little skittish without any weight. Kneeling is no problem, but paddling tandem with my son is "exciting". I feel totally confident that with a load of camping gear, it will settle d...

Babs,

Run, don't walk from that hardware store!

I got my router bits from Grizzly tools. Very reasonable. Sometimes the Bead & Cove bits are listed as canoe bits. You should be able to find a good thin kerf saw blade at any good hardware store.

Mack, Welcome. I agonized over that first strip on my Prospector for what seemed like days. I was afraid to start off on the wrong strip so to speak. I finally went with gravity. I attached the first strip at the center mold and let it take a fair curve and went from there. I definately would not fo...

Jake, Welcome. The Prospector is a fun build. I think you are asking if there is a concave area in the canoe from the stems back toward the broader section of the canoe. Yes there is. Some refer to this as "cheek" and the Prospector definately has some. Just be sure to keep your strilps ti...
