I've always followed the instructions which directed me to cut the mold at the shear line. The cut does not go all the way across though.

End pour

Hi gang,

I'm building a Chesapeak 17, stitch and glue kayak. Chesapeake calls for the end pour before the deck is installed. I've heard of folks on this list standing their boat on end to do the pour. Any opinions as to which is more efrfective?

To save some $ look at Raka.com. A 3 gallon kit is well under $150.00 US.

Forget the dog. When you place the seats it will become clear. One seat will be closer to the end than the other to allow room for the front paddler's knees. When paddling with two persons, the end with the seat furthest from the end is the bow. When paddling alone you go the other way so you are si...

Doug, my 2 cents. What you need: 1. Good bond 2. Cheap You don't need: 1. Gap filling as ideally there should be no gaps. 2. Waterproof as when finished there will be no water exposure. 3. Light brown color as with no gaps you won't see the color of the glue. In reality we all get gaps. Its a fact o...

When I installed the keel on my Laker I didn't use screws. The hull had been glassed and I had tried paddling w/o the keel and elected to install one. I simply scuffed the hull where the keel would go and set the keel in place with thickened epoxy and weighted it down. I used a plastic squeegee to r...

I have a keel on my 16' Laker. It was installed after the canoe was glassed. I took a piece of ash, 3/4 X 3/4 and cut a bevel on the table saw which gave me an end section view of a trapezoid which is 3/4 on the bottom and 3/8 on the top. I then epoxied this piece to the bottom of the canoe and fair...

I've built 3 canoes from scrap lumber. The lumber is scrap cedar house siding. I can get about 6 strips from a piece of scrap. Some of the scraps are only 4 or 5 feet long. I first cut up the strips, ending up with a lot of 1/4" X 3/4" X 4 to 10 foot pieces. I then cut scarph joints in an ...

Randy, the majority of the strength of these boats is the glass/epoxy. The purpose of the wood is to separate the 2 glass skins and to look pretty.

I wouldn't think yuou would have to sand with much finer than 120 prior to applying epoxy. Epoxy does a marvelous job of filling and leveling.

Please don't do one side and let it cure before doing the second. It's much better to do all of your glass at one time. When I glassed my boats I laid down the extra layer in the football area and then the glass for the entire boat. After wetting out I can't see the edge of the football patch under ...
