next

Possibly a kayak, but I have some furniture to build first. My wife wants a couch and says that if I can build a canoe, a couch should be easy. Now she's mentioning a matching chair. I better get busy so I can start on the kayak.

I used a pipe cleaner to get two coats down the holes. I have heard of cotton swabs being used as well. Good luck.

It really floats

The maiden voyage went very well. Lake Erie was kind and so was mother nature and I was able to test out the canoe which handled nicely. I am expecting to get pictures taken on Saturday, so all you kind folks can see what your posts and advice helped build. The first real test will be on Friday, whe...

I think the spots are either poorly mixed epoxy or spots of blush (if that can happen). Whatever they are, the varnish isn't drying over them. The epoxy had cured for over a week maybe longer.(I'm losing track of time) There are a few on the outside too. (haven't varnished the outside yet) Anyway, t...

okay

That sounds like a plan. I noticed a few more spots, they all are smaller in the 1/8 to 1/4 inch range. I didn't notice any clogging when I sanded the epoxy and am wondering if there could be something else causing this? I will try the heat gun technique and hope for the best. If it doesn't work, I'...

A couple of funky spots

I have three small spots under and behind the rear seat that seem to not want to dry. I think I remember reading that this is caused by uncured or unmixed epoxy, and will never dry completely. Is this a fix that needs to be done ASAP or can I wait until the season is over? The largest is like an obl...

got it

I fixed the humidity problem. Got the dehumidifier going, full bore, in the garage. :twisted evil The second coat dried right up. Should be able to put 3rd coat (barely thinned) on the trim Thursday, with no problem. Then I can flip, and get busy on the outside. Good luck down there in Florida, Its ...

high humidity

Okay, varnishing is coming out pretty good considering it's 89 degrees plus outside. (grrr) It is taking a little longer to dry though. I was wondering if anyone has added Japan dryer to help the varnish dry and if so, did it affect the quality of the finished product? I was hoping for a coat a day ...

High gloss

Glad to know it will last. The extra UV protection sold me on it. I was a bit nervous(understatement) and really dreading all that sanding again. Even worse than that was the thought of cleaning the shop again, boy was it dusty. All's well that ends well, though. I can't wait to get her in the water...

Epifanes High Gloss Extra UV filter????

I used this varnish, thinned, for the first coat on the trim and paddles and noticed, as I was cleaning the can, that it says for use ABOVE the waterline. Is this going to be a problem? I thought that Epifanes was the good stuff?

What a relief

Thanks for the picture Glen, I wasn't planning on going that deep on my relief, so I guess I shouldn't have any trouble.
