seat

hi Steve,
looks great, very nice colorscheme.
One question: The seats are marvellously shaped. Did you make those seats yourself ?
thanks,

happy newyear in 2008 I haven't been posting either, very busy as single parent with the kids and all things in and around the house. Still building but at a slower pace (2007: SOF and several paddels). My heart is here at this forum, where I learned and passed on the skills of stripbuilding in prev...

Roscoe, Spruce is cheap , I built a kayak from 19mm x 4,5mm spruce strips. the spruce boards were all shorter hten the kayak itself, which is no problem using butt joints. The weight (14-15kg) is no problem if you rip the strips like this. More info http://www.qajaq.be/DiskoBay.htm http://www.qajaq....

tptbum, I'm afraid I see this a little different. I don't mean to be offensive here, but I 'll give it a try. For me, there is a difference between "working on the canoe as a hobby" and "haven't done anything on the canoe for 2 years". If you really want to start working on it ag...

Talking paddels

My question, has anyone used Titebond III for glueing wood for paddles ? What are you feelings about TB III ? Made 2 more canoe paddles for WW, may seem odd shaped, but I got the idea of a short wide blade after seeing a Gillespie Paddle. http://www.qajaq.be/P6090197_lg.jpg http://www.qajaq.be/P6090...

hi Roger, I have no experience with other thechniques then butt joints (strips in the hull) or scarf joints (gunwales, keelson ...). If you 're able to position the scarf so that the woodgrains match, I don't think anyone will notice there is a joint. For me, it doesn't matter if one can see the joi...

Bryan, sorry but I don't really agree with you. If the cloth was contaminated with oil/greese, the epoxy will still harden, but won't stick on the cloth in that area. My bet is that a) the mixture wasn't well enough stirred. I always mix epoxy & resin for at least 3 minutes, and always go well o...

I 've used spruce on my latest strip kayak, and to me it's better is more then 1 way: it's very cheap, quite light as well (4,5mm thickness X 19mm stripheight): 15 kg finished. And personally to me: looks nicer then cedar.

More pics on my site under Disko Bay Kayak.

1) Oil the caning of your seats Yes you should oil the caning of your seats, but oil it on the top side only and leave the bottom side breath. Re-oil the caning every 5 trips or so, to keep water & damp out. 2) Screws to support the gunwales Normally you have mounted the inner gunwales first, us...

the best book for this is "Baidarka: The Kayak" by George Dyson (indeed, the one who is selling skinning & lashing material for SOF's). Unfortunately, the book is out of print, try to get a 2nd hand one.

Matt,
looking at the work done on the steambox alone, it looks like you 're into perfection. I 'm looking forward to see the progress on your canoe.
Have fun,

The size of the steambox or pipe is an important factor.

some more info about steambending on the web:
