i use a curved mold made from laminated 2x6's, faced with a 1/8" white faced hardboard and held together with clamps for the curved blades. i use hardboard covered flat 2x6's for the flat ones. you can design as much or as little flex in the blades as you wish. by putting the glass in the middl...

filler

i used the durhams with wood flour and got an excellent match. the durhams is really light but the wood flour is really dark, like varnished end grain. i mix the wood flour with water first, like a thick paste then slowly add this to the durhams. when wet out with epoxy, the match is almost invisabl...

varnish and epoxy are easily applied to the scuppers with large pipe cleaners! they work very well and are disposable. i set a 3/8" brad point bit against a temporayr fence in my drill press, marked the hole locations and drilled away. i cut the center out with a jigsaw, advantage was no tearou...

wee lassie project

this is the link to my current wee lassie project. it is supposed to be a minimalist canoe but i went the other way. absolutly no metal is being used in the boat. all the hardware is hand carved wood. mostly cherry. the fore and aft hatches are actualy kayak hatches and were built per one ocean kaya...

it isn't a top heavy balance thing. we currently use a grumman 17' for trips but was just wondering if bm had a bigger boat. sounds like 36" is max width most are comfortable with and the freedom 17'9 the longest. other than more surface area (aka slower) what are the drawbacks to making a boat...

what is "an eskimo roll special?" :thinking my passenger and i are over 550 with just us in the boat. add a small cooler and 2 weeks worth of gear and supplies and it seems we will be sleeping with the fishes. i was considering upsizing the 17'9 but now i have reservations about doing that...

climb cutting

a friend of mine tried this and launched a 12' strip over 250 feet! it is dangerous. two reasons i know of for tearing out chunks are dull bits (i sharpen the bits even when new with a diamond hone) and feeding so fast that the bit can't keep up. it's easy to feed the strips too fast, one right afte...

bullit proof paddle tips....

epoxy, saw dust, silica and chopped fiberglass mixed to a peanut butter like goo. used a dremel saw bit in the d tool and carved a 1'8 x 1/4" slit across the tip of the blade. 1/8 wide, 1/4 deep. used aluminum foil for a mould. coated the slit with plain mixed epoxy till it stayed shiney. then ...

best thing i have used so far to remove a run is 600 wet sandpaper wrapped around a paint stick or other smooth, flat object. a light touch will work wonders. levels the run without damaging surrounding finish.........bear

air bubble fix

had the same problem on the inside so i did the following. took a really small drill, about 1/32" in s dremel tool and carefully drilled just through the glass. used a magic marker to mark the bit at about 1/16th inch deep. drilled hole and used thin super glue from hobby shop to fill. can not ...

gilpatric said in his book if he were to add a keel to any boat it would be this one. if you're on a lake a lot, then a standard keel would work. if on a river a lot, then a shoe keel would probably be better.
