Re: FS: Freedom Solo Plans
I figured it would be good. We have a Wildfire and a Magic, so this was going to replace the Wildfire for our BWCA trips. Instead of solo boats, we've been using the Freedom 17.

FS: Freedom Solo Plans
I have a completely unused set of Freedom Solo plans which I'll never use, because a) I already have two solo canoes, and b) my allergy to epoxy continues to get worse with each boat, so if I build another boat, it will by my last and it will be my own design. I wish that wasn't the case, because I ...

Easy to Build Canoe Stand
I made this easy to build canoe stand this summer. It worked out great for working on my Ursa canoe. If you're going to use it for sanding, it's not a bad idea to reinforce the connection between the feet and the uprights. http://www.paddlinglight.com/pl/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/hansel_bryan_11080...

Nice looking kayak. Must feel great to get it on the water after all this time.
What are you using for a seat in that thing? And how about adding some carbon fiber thigh braces?

Re: inside stems
It probably saves a couple of pounds. I never weighed the stems to figure it out. I always glass around my stems, which some builders don't do when using the internal/external stems.

Re: inside stems
You can use whatever width you'd like. I usually use 3/4-inch cedar strips for the stems. I also don't use an internal stem -- saves weight.

Re: just wondering
After you got good at it, depending on the level of finish, you could crank out one to two a month. There's some curing time involved, so that adds waiting time before you can varnish.

Re: Need a double check
The fiberglass won't add any appreciable thickness that you'll need to worry about. Plane it so that the stem band looks good when fitted on just the wood.

I'm with Randy. You could do it the way, you want, but fiberglass is rough on tools.

Launching the Prototype Canoe
I launched the prototype canoe, which is tentatively named Ursa. We paddled three miles, which isn't enough distance to figure everything out, but I did get some initial impressions. The canoe feels stable enough (Ilena thinks less than the Freedom, but I think about the same). It feels more stable ...
