Re: Douglas Fir
I used white oak for the gunwales on my redbird, and it's about 75 pounds(The boat). It weathered the last winter outdoors, and we had a bit of rain here in California. I recently scraped and sanded all that oak and re varnished all of it. I personally would choose a hardwood for the gunwales, decks...

Redbird nearing completion
All,
It's taken awhile, but it's ready for the maiden voyage. Thanks to all for the help and encouragement along the way. http://shawnkielty.blogspot.com/2021/09 ... etion.html

Re: Strongback Construction - Screw or Screw & Glue?
Mine is on about it's third life and a year ago when I moved ... I took it apart and put it back together. Screws, and no glue is my advice.

Re: Redbird Redux ... Or Finally Get Back to Work.
Hi Jim, Brian. Thanks for your comments. The weather here is just commenting now about spring, and that means that it can be somewhat nice. The last day of possible frost here is 2/21, and even at best, it's hardly a frost. I have a pretty good space here and what I have been referring to as "i...
