Re: How far to sand first fiberglass epoxy coat?

Thanks I really like the stemless approach. Halfway through a redbird and found the stems problematic, but it is my first build. Thank you all for the info.

Re: How far to sand first fiberglass epoxy coat?

Really like the stemless approach. What are the implications re strength and glassing. Is there extra glass on the ends ? If you could post a close up picture or two of the finished curves that would be appreciated especially where the change between butt joining the centre and the 'half lapping'. T...

Re: Epoxy and fibreglass

Is this what I need,? wide enough at 1.3 metres. Thickness 0.15mm. In the spec sheet it gives number of strands per cm on the warp 8.9 and the weft 6. Doesn't seem many? I can't get that page to open on this device. If you could have a look please and let me know what you think. Thanks in advance. h...

Re: First timer

I will try a picture or youtube video. It is at the sharp end, not where the keel meets the stem. I will grab a few pictures this week end for discussion or ridicule !.

Re: First timer

Progress report. Cut and fitted all the stations and have everything where it should be. A couple of questions. The station mould for #8 is attached to the stem mould. I have reduced the template to allow for the thickness of the stem mould (7/8). It appears that this has made the moulds too small. ...

Strips onto stems.

Looking throught the book and can't find reference to gluing strips to the inner stem. Would this be epoxy or the yellow glue?.
I would imagine that they would be epoxied onto epoxy laminated stem.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Epoxy and fibreglass

Thanks for a very comprehensive response. Really helpful. I have found a supplier nearer to home too. Has anyone had any issues with epoxy incompatabilty? To move things on I need to bond the stems with epoxy. I have epoxy in my workshop but it isn't wests. If I bond the stems with this will I creat...

Re: Epoxy and fibreglass

Thank you cruiser, most helpful. To tackle a similar issue the book suggest 2 to 2 and a half gallons per canoe. Problem is it is sold by weight and a U.S. Gallon is different to a U.K gallon. I am thinking that ten litres is sufficient and if so what does that weigh?.
Again thank you in advance.

Epoxy and fibreglass

Looking for epoxy here on France. There are a couple of suppliers near me (3hrs away). I need some epoxy now for the stems and intend to get the glass cloth at the same time. The book states that six ounce sheathing will be best. How does this translate into metric or is it sold here using imperial ...

Re: First timer

Just worked out why the stem is short on station 7. I thought the stem levelled out parallel with the strongback, but it doesn't, it raises up to the profile line of station 7 minus the thickness of the inner stem. Not such a disaster after all. Easy repair. Onwards and upwards.

Re: First timer

Some excellent advice, thank you. As time progresses I will keep you all in the loop. Error number one today!. Reading the plans in 'the book' for the redbird stem it states the measuerments are the "distance from station 7 to forward edge of inside stem" so I understood that the thickness...

First timer

Hello. After many years of procrastination I have finally started on a build. It is my intention to build two redbirds. I am a carpenter joiner and have machinery and hopefully skills enough to create something acceptable. I have studied the book and decided to approach the laying out of plans in a ...
