Re: 17' 0" Freedom
I'll have to look back on my records, but I think I used a heavy bias woven 4" carbon tape to cover my gunnels, on both my red Kite and the carbon copy. I was very disappointed with the weight associated with those gunnels. IIRC, the tape was .032" thick, which required massive (relatively...

Re: 17' 0" Freedom
Randy, Thanks for that thorough description of your gunnel (guwale, gunwhale) lamination technique. I love the idea of in place laminating to reproduce the sheer line shape in all planes. Do you recall the foam dimensions and size/weight of the carbon sleeving? On my only composite build, I used a f...

Re: 17' 0" Freedom
Wow, that's a large core!! I used some Cabosil thickened epoxy, squeegeed into place to a penciled in outline. I then layed in the H80 foam, and piled everything I could find to hold the foam in place. Later, I feathered the sharp edge of the foam, and added a single layer (a collection of scraps, a...

Re: 17' 0" Freedom
Thanks Randy ! Another builder, I know from another site, used 1/8" Divynicel. He thought his insert was just over 1 #. For now I'm content with my wood insert, but will definitely look into foam on my next composite build ! Glad the carbon sleeve worked ! Again Thanks ! Jim I just joined here...
