Re: What's This ? is it amine blush?

Hi Folks Thank you for your replies.I was scraping and sanding the insides today and I have come to the conclusion it is definately the two applications of resin where i have sanded off a bit of the last one.It is nearly two weeks since I applied it and in think it may still be,a little soft in plac...

Re: What's This ? is it amine blush?

Hi Jim and Brian Thank you for your replies. Resin is from uk epoxy.I have used it a lot and had this happen before.I think I remember it disapppearing when I varnish but I have also had varnish drying problems in the past and that may have been on the boats that had this effect. I know it would mak...

What's This ? is it amine blush?

Hello folks I ahve made a few canoes now and sometimes have this when I reach sanding stage after glassing. My resin has been left 2 weeks and I have scraped and sanded it and I have left it alone whilst fitting gunwales. As you can see in the picture there is an area that looks to me like perhaps th...

Re: Fairing the inner hull.

I like cabinet scrapers (made from an ordinary piece of mild steel) for this part of the build. I have filed a selection of them to varying curves for the different areas of the hull and am starting to build up a nice collection of useful shapes. http://i.imgur.com/Jb4MdNVl.jpg?1 Once you have them ...

Re: Canoecraft Offset Revisions

Hello Folks It is seven years since I made my moulds and I have been using them to make canoes with no need to draw up fresh plans. Recently I made some strips for a customer to make his own boat and he is in the process of drawing up his moulds. He came to see me for some more strips on Friday and a...

Re: Attaching inner stem to stem mold

Hi Rusty I use one screw at the bottom end( top when on the jig) of the stem where it hits the station.Screwing through the station into the end of the stem.I don't use a screw that is any bigger than a no 6 by 1 1/ 4" to avoid splitting the stem.At the other end I clamp the stem on and also ad...

Re: Renovation of a 100+ year old Canoe

Hi Wysedav
Thank you I went ahead with teak cleaner today which revealed she might be a Thomas Gordon instead of a Strickland as I think I found the word Gordon under the importers plate.
If only these old canoes could talk I bet they would have interesting tales to tell :-)

Cheers

Renovation of a 100+ year old Canoe

Hi Folks My latest project is a little different but it still brings up the occasional question that some here may be able to help me with. I am restoring a 100 + year old Canoe (Probably a Strickland according to Dick Persson of the WCHA.) http://i.imgur.com/ci34dnql.jpg I have begun to strip the o...

Has anyone made a canoe sailing rig?

Hello Folks I have started making some parts for a sailing rig and just wondered if anyone else has done this what design they used and how they got on particularly with sailing which is an unknown area to me. :thinking I am working from Todd Bradshaws excellent book "Canoe Rig the Essence and ...

Re: Dry Time for Epifanes varnish?

Hi Rob I know you are not having drying problems as such but whilst talking to a friend of mine who is keen on restoring old wooden Canoes he mentioned that it helps to turn the boat over to dry the varnish on the inside because the solvents sink and collect making it take longer. I haven't heard th...

Re: Just want to confirm the order of things

Hi Bob

Sounds Like a Kayak build and I have only done one as most of my builds have been open boats.
I think you have the order right apart from one thing. If you are going to varnish the inside of the hull I would do this before assembling the two halves.

Re: Spindle moulder or router...

Yes I am here :wink and here is a bit of clarification on the spindle moulder versus router issue. I have had both for years (as a furniture maker) and of the two prefer my spindle for making planking. 1. it is quicker 2.it has a power feed attachment. I can use the faster of two feed speeds when ma...
