Re: Redbird finished

Congratulations! I am on my third Redbird (for my third son). Have you or are you considering a brass stem band? I think it is a very practical and nice looking finishing touch.

Re: Steam Bending Stems

I'll have to check out a Freedom. Is that a "new" design since 2002?

Re: Steam Bending Stems

This sounds even simpler than my way... Does this mean I will have to build a FOURTH Redbird?

Steam Bending Stems

I just finished steam bending the stems for my third Redbird. I developed a new technique and I told my helper (my wife) that if the rest of the project goes as much easier as this did, the third time will indeed be the charm. I started out as “Canoecraft” suggests by deciding in what order and orie...

Re: varnishing in the scuppers

I used Q-tips but it took several and they were continuously coming apart. Pipe cleaners definitely sound like a better idea. It seems to me this is 99% done for protection and maybe 1% for appearance. Not much anyone can see there but protection is the key.

Re: Seagrass seats

Looks very nice but is it waterproof? I'd worry that if it got wet on a trip, it might stay wet for a while.

Re: Clear Cedar

I keep saying how understanding my wife has been about this canoe building. When I set up shop, the first thing I bought was a good 10" Rigid (brand) table saw. This forum or John Michne or someone put me onto the Freud Diablo Saw blades. I use a 7 1/4" 40 tooth "Finish/Plywood" ...

Re: Clear Cedar

Yes I do bead and cove. I'm sure I will be able to get strips from more that 1/2 of each of the boads I bought.

Re: Shop Lighting

I will for sure. Will call first. You are also welcome here (of course) as are any other builders or potential builders. Curious about the 1/2.. One half done or did you wife convince you to make a knick knack shelf??

Re: Clear Cedar

Thanks, Jim! Great tip. Went to Menards this morning and got 7 1x6x10 foot Cedar boards. None are completely clear but I will be able to get lots of strips out of them. Hopefully will be enough with what I already have but if not, I will check them out again. Less money and also saves a 5 or 6 hour ...

Re: Shop Lighting

Did you really mean # TWENTY?? That is truly awesome! My in-laws live in Badger and we also have family in Okoboji so we are in or near Humboldt several times a year. Can I worm an invite to stop and see you some day?

Shop Lighting

Not sure if I have made this post before or not. If I did it was at least few years back so probably no harm in posting it again. I built my first Redbird in my basement. I got to the point where I was ready to install the seats and the thwarts and wanted to be able to hoist it on my shoulders and b...

Re: My health

We all hope for the very best outcome for you, whatever that turns out to be. Obviously, at least at this time, there is no clear cut answer. This makes all the "problems" we run up against building strippers seem trivial.

Clear Cedar

I will be doing some Google searches but can anyone recommend a good source for clear cedar in the Iowa, Minnesota, Illinois area? My source in Iowa City went out of business. I bookmatch and scarf the joints so 8 to 12 foot lengths work fine for me.

Back at it after a Four year break....

Yes, I'm afraid you read that right. I am back to building my second Redbird for my second son. I was a huge fan of and user of the old Bear Mountain Forum back in 2003. I only looked at and used this "new" one looked after by Glen Smith a few times. As I have just told Glen, I had a few q...
