Caning question

I have built my seats in a trapezoid shape, but to add a different look I've added some shape. Please look at the attached pictures. http://s108.photobucket.com/albums/n4/mack_014/?action=view&current=May2001.jpg I'm going to cane the seats and I'm going to drill 1/4" holes 3/8' back from t...

I've always used a product called bowling alley wax on my cast iron and tool beds. Not only does it prevent rust it also helps everything to slide better. I even use it on the stainless steel deck of my delta plainer. Makes everything preform just a little better.

I used fiberglass with what I thought was a flaw, a wrincle, that I could work out when I put the resin on. Boy that was a big mistake. I won't ever use fiberglass with any flaws in it again, I had a lot of work fixing it when it won't lay flat. I'd try getting it replaced.

What do you guys think about this system?
http://s108.photobucket.com/albums/n4/m ... a8c6-1.jpg
I was thinking about using it on my boat. The best of both worlds, bolted to the inner gunwale and epoxied to the side of the hull.
Thanks,

That cheek also bring the sides if the canoe closer together. This is the area were I had the most problems getting my staple less prospector to hold the molds. Extra clamps painter’s tape, bungie cords all helped to keep the lines of the boat. After I finished stripping and fiberglassing the outsid...

Rick,
I have been looking for a marine varnish for my project. One thing that I keep seeing in many of the products that have been recommended is that they are for above waterline use. Are these products still alright to use on a strip canoe?

I have also been using a video that I bought from Sandy Point Boat works LLC. Although I'm not building one of his boats I have found his video very helpful. In it he says to temporarily place the yoke before you install your decks because it will change the shape of the hull. The video actually sho...

Thwart placement questions

Hi Guys, Working on my chestnut prospector and I have some question about determining some of my measurements and placements. The specs in Canoecraft say that the Maximum beam is 35” and that the Gunwale Beam is 34”. Where are these measurement taken from? On the outside of the outer gunwale, the ou...

Hi Bill, I'm working on finishing my prospector and I've got to say that wrinkled fiberglass was a problem for me as well. I bought my glass on a roll and when I laid it out I had a raised crease. I thought I could iron it out, didn't work. Tried using a hot air gun, didn't work. I finally thought t...

Black walnut seats

My current project is a prospector which has highlights of ash and black walnut. My question is have any of you ever used black walnut for the seats? Is it a good choice of hardwood that will stand up to the wear and tear?
Thanks guy,

spraying with a HVLP sysetem

Hello Guys, Just did a search on this site on spaying varnish using a HVLP gun and couldn’t find a lot about it. You guys that spray, do you have a favorite varnish? I have read the labels on the spar varnishes that are in the local big box stores and paint shops but haven’t found any with clear spr...

Gunwale prep

I am using scuppered inwales on my canoe and was reading an internet site that recommended “When you epoxy the blocks to the base strip, it is a good idea to presoak the strip with unthickened epoxy. Wipe off the excess after about ten minutes, then glue the blocks on with thickened epoxy.” This is ...

I used glue made by Elmer’s. They call it Carpenter's Wood Glue Gel (Exterior) It is water proof and it looks light brown in the bottle but it dried like tite bond glue. The thing I like about it is that it's a no run gel formula. I stripped my canoe with the cove up, with this glue it seemed to hol...
