Aljo Hi. Yes the rubber bands exert plenty of pressure to hold the strips against each other. The force is great enough to deform the strips away from the molds if you don't band them down to the forms. I noticed that as soon as I started going up around the sharper curve of the hull. Michigan winte...

Hi Glen. There was only one coat of epoxy to coat that ash. (probably a mistake but we were beginners). There are at least two coats of varnish (Coma Bernise) on those gunnels. The boat was stored on two saw horses for the last two years that our son had it North in Michigan's U.P. but it was usuall...

Blackening ash gunnels
So it's about 3 years now after we've finished and launched the 38 Special solo. We epoxied and varnished all exposed ash and hardwood trim including the outside gunnels. But I am now noticing that we have blackening ash on the underside of the outside gunnels, so apparently the epoxy coat was not a...

I saw a video of the Rangely Lakes Trout Boat (pattern available through Newfound Woodworks). Michael was standing right up in it fly casting and poling about. Stood right up on the gunnels just dinking around. It's a very fast rowing craft and phenomenally stable. They have the plans there for the ...

Dawne I just took another look at your 360 and 361 photos. Looking at the play of light immediately to the left of the larger bubble I'm thinking that you have some contaminated adhesion there as well. As others have said the corruption seems to be between the last (top) layer of epoxy and the varni...

Matthew - the tape is intriguing. I also tried various experiments with fishing line but found I couldn't keep the tension constant or controlled. But the tape does not produce a (noticable) gap? Sounds good. My garage (shop) gets quite hot. Do you think the glue from the tape would be an issue tryi...

Further update on stapless Freedom incl. tips and tricks
[This post is also posted in the builder's tips area]. Ran into some issues last year with trying stapless method of only rubber bands. Try as I might the rubber bands were not holding the strips tight to the forms. Even hot glue was not holding the strips to the forms and was messy, time consuming ...

Poorman's Stapless Method
Ran into some issues last year with trying stapless method of only rubber bands. Try as I might the rubber bands were not holding the strips tight to the forms. Even hot glue was not holding the strips to the forms and was messy, time consuming etc. (could be wrong glue used too). Money ran out (une...

Stapless Freedom 17 update
Started up the build on the Freedom 17 again. (laid off so money is kind of weird right now) Been doing some experimenting with stapless clamping. Found a really good supplier for 1/4" bungee cord to wrap around the hull forms and still using rubber bands to band the strips to each other. Still...

I think technically it's doable. Sometimes it's done in paddles. I would have to consider the different coefficients of expansion in the woods though. Differing woods will sometimes have a greatly differing rate of expansion due to temps and moisture and it has been known to cause the glue joints to...
