Re: Giving up I guess.

Thanks, Jim. I think the most important thing on a first boat is managing one’s expectations. It’s just discouraging as I really loved the process up untill now. There’s a guy in the area I know of who builds stunning kayaks. I’ll probably enlist his help for my next boat if possible.

Re: Giving up I guess.

I really did line everything up. I’m gonna try to make it work. I don’t know if I should scrape away some of the wrinkles or just leave them as there isn’t air pockets beneath them. I honestly just wanna start another, better canoe but I’m shackled with this one for the time being. I won’t be using ...

Giving up I guess.

I’m not convinced I’ll ever be able to fiberglass properly. Since I found the roller method bunk for the outside, I tried the brush for the inside. Still no luck. I tried giving the fabric slack, and whenever I really tried to squeegee out the excess resin it would just pull the cloth away, so now I...

Re: Fiber glass horrors

It’s not a lost cause by any means. There’s some silver fleck on it and only one bad patch. Not glaringly blotchy or anything. Also, what’s the best way to proceed with sanding? Do I leave it on the forms for outside sanding? I wanna get to work on the inside but flipping it back upside down to do t...

Fiber glass horrors

So i did the glass layup on my prospector a few days ago, and what a shit show it was. Basically I lost my cool when I couldn’t work a few wrinkles out and this cascaded into panicked, haphazard work. I really should have had an additional helper to do just mixing while 2 people applied. All in all,...

Re: Margin of error for gaps?

Thank you all!!! I actually used some junk molds and a mistake stem and made a “mock up” mini hull section with scrap planking . I even gauged some nasty dents/cracks into it to see how well the epoxy would fill and used it for practice. I bought the good stuff (west 207 clear hardener) and in mid t...

Margin of error for gaps?

Hi all, I’m currently in the sanding phase of building a prospector (first build). I’ve filled all notable gaps and closed void with dust thickened epoxy as directed, but still seeing tiny ribbon thin cracks (not voids, just little divers you can barely get a finger nail into between some planking. ...
