Re: Stretch the Ranger or buy the Nomad?
Well... I built her. Streched out the ranger to 16'8". Beautiful looking hull... today was sea trials. Very happy with how she handles. The only issue is she is oilcanning a bit more than I would like. I am used to it in my royalex boats, -and its probably not a structural problem... but.... if...

Re: Stretch the Ranger or buy the Nomad?
Thanks for the insight guys. I have spent a good amount of time in a raven, kipawa, dumoine, temagami and winisk. I don't really like how they paddle at all. To me they feel like full keeled sailboats. They hold a great course but dont dance on the water. For me in production boats I like the novacr...

Stretch the Ranger or buy the Nomad?
Hey Guys, Its been a decade since my last build. I was 22 at the time and single. Now I am 32 with a wife and 2 toddlers. Life has been good. Anyway, I need a bigger canoe. I still have the forms for the ranger in my basement. So I am thinking about stretching it to 17'. The other choice is to build...

Its not blush. Its not compatibility. I had the exact same problem on my ranger. you have in sufficient airflow and the evaporating vapors from the thinner cannot leave the canoe and are setting on top of the varnish and not allowing it to set. take a fan and blow it over the canoe to create some ai...

ok, next update.... got the old layer of varnish off.... sanded and scraped right to the epoxy. Then I vacuumed the hull. wiped it down with a swiffer pad, let it sit, wiped it again, no solvents. Applied a SUPER THIN coat of epiphanes high-gloss varnish, thinned 30% with epihanes brush thinner. 5 h...

Ok, I am back from my trip. I think the boat problems were a blessing in disguise. I had to deal with several log jams, and drag my royalex boat fully loaded over them. Some of these jams were 100s of meter long and up to 10ft tall. I might have cried if I had to drag my stripper over these with all...

Ok something is definately F****D up (excuse the french) 4 hours later and the varnish is RUNNIER then when I applied it. Its like water now, well not really water because it is not pooling, but when I touch it it is not sticky at all. It has a texture similiar to liqiud hand soap. I am begining to ...

Yup, I have the heater going now.... the boat is not as sticky today, and is dry in spots. Of course the varnish is now full of fingerprints from me testing it so a good sanding is inorder. I hope the next coat will cure in reasonable time, especially the section where I wiped it off with thinner. :...

Last coat of epoxy went on may 3 or 4.... You think that 2 weeks is not enough time? Perhaps.... I only wiped off a small section just to see if thinner would take it down, it did.... I will wait another few days..... The suspense is killing me, Palmerfest is this weekend and I wanted to have the bo...

Varnish --- yet more trouble....
So, the outside is varnished.... it all hardened up. Moved onto the inside: 24 hours later the WHOLE inside is still tacky.... Epiphanes varnish thinned 15%, room is 21degrees RH is about 40% today. What do I do? I tried wiping it down with thinner, and that removed the sticky varnish without too mu...

ooops varnish over uncured epoxy....
Everything was going so well.... all the seats and deckplates are built, inside and outside were sanded, gunnels were on and level no problem.... I got a little cocky. I noticed before varnishing that there were some waves in the outer hull. I leveled them with epoxy, waited 2 days till it was sanda...

Thinning Varnish
Howdy.... Its time to Varnish!!!!!!!!! I have never done this before. I understend bubbles are a bad thing and need to be avoided. I also understand that stirring varnish causes bubbles. What I dont understand is how to mix in thinner without stirring? Anyone want to walk me through tthe process of ...
