These are not small pinhead bubbles. These are about the size of a quarter and are underneath the cloth. I'm thinking I might be able to inject some resin into them with a syringe.

I don't have any kind of climate control in the shop, so not much option there. I think next time I'll try putting on a sealer coat before the cloth. Canoecraft tells you not to worry much about filling small gaps since the epoxy will fill it, so I never paid much attention to anything unless it was...

I haven't hand many issue with my outside glassing on the two canoes I've done. The first had a lot of runs but I learned from those mistakes and the second canoe is 100% better. The issue I do have is that on the first canoe, the inside glass ended up with quite a few (a dozen probably) bubbles und...

Seat hardware

The last boat I built I ordered the seat hanging hardware from a supplier that someone gave me from this forum, but now, a year later, I can't remember the site. Does anyone know of a good place to order the bolts, washers, nuts, etc.? I'd like to have brass but stainless would work as well. I thoug...

It's an Ace 14 by Arch Davis. It's of plywood construction so it'll be painted when its finished, which is why I want to try one of Bear Mtn's designs. I prefer to leave the grain showing if I'm going to spend a year working on something. Here's a picture off his website. Mine is still quite a ways ...

Question on small boat designs

I've completed a canoe, and am currently working on a 14' foot sailboat at home (70% complete), that's the extent of my experience with boat building. I'm thinking about my next project at work, it will be a group project with the boys I work with, and am interested in some of the small boat designs...

Thanks for the kind words, I'll be sure to pass them along to the boys. Funny thing about the 'management'... When they saw the final project they were so blown away that they didn't want it used. They wanted me to build a display case for it and leave it out on display for the public where it would...

Finally in the water!

I am the Arts and Crafts Instructor at the Florida Sheriffs Boys Ranch in Live Oak, FL on the banks of the Suwannee River. Almost a year ago a group of boys and I started building our first canoe, a Hiawatha 15'. After a long time, a lot of mistakes, and a lot of work, we finally put her into the br...

Seat hanging height

I'm trying to hang the seats in my Hiawatha 15'. According to Canoecraft the average measurement for space under the seats should be 9 1/2' to 10 1/2'. However, if I use that figure and place my seats at 9 1/2' from the bottom, they end up only about 1/2 below the inwale. This seems way to high to m...

Thanks Glen, clearly your net searching skills are greater than my own. I think I'll get that book and see what I can learn. It'd be really satisfying to be able to finish things with something I grew in the back yard :)

Tung oil

I have a Tung tree in my yard that drops tons of fruit. Anyone know how to extract the Tung Oil? Or know of a good resource for learning how? My net searching skills turned up nil.
