It seems that I can now answer my own question. The Grey Owl site has a very good page on paddle sizing--I just didn't see the link at first.

I have pretty much settled on building a Freedom 17. I'm looking ahead to the planking without staples and wondering if I should build with planks cove up or bead up. It seems cove up gives better glue control, but it's harder to tape or press the planks down without damaging the coves. With bead up...

Paddle length

I'm thinking I'll buy and finish a paddle this winter before it's warm enough to work in my unheated garage. Can someone offer advice on length? Some sites quote different lengths whether you are in the bow or stern, measuring while sitting or standing, shaft length vs total length, etc. If it helps...
