Hi Tom, I'll let you know when it's done. Kyle is trying to build this one all by himself, and I'm only helping him when he needs it. I've only helped him with a few strips (some easy ones) and the fibreglassing, and he'll probably need help with gunnels, and seat placement. He's getting pretty good...

Another Redbird
Hi Tom, We were amazed how nice your boat looked a few months ago when we visited, and it looks fantastic now! I'm glad it's finally in the water! When we saw the pictures here, we recognized Killarney right away. We're just scraping and sanding the inside of our new 'Bird. We never got the strips c...

Wiping down before epoxy
Best way is to blow it off with compressed air. Once you apply a moist cloth, it'll raise the grain a bit, and some guys will want to sand that off again anyway. Best way is compressed air. Second best is damp cloth. Why would anyone waste a Swiffer?

Mounting Brass Stem Bands
On my first Redbird I mounted 3/8" cove backed brass stem bands. I used a bedding compound (no silicone) and countersunk stainless steel screws with oval heads. I guess I could have used brass screws, but I couldn't find them with oval heads. If you take your time, and centerpunch before drilli...

consistency of strips
Hi Ed, That's a good question. I'm on my fourth boat. My first boat I bought my strips pre-cut from Carlisle Canoes. The strips were great. No planing necessary. My second boat, my brother in law cut them, and he did a really good job, but they were only 8 feet long. They were really consistent, but...

Planing strips
Bryan,
If I was going to plane them, I'd only bother doing the inside surface of the strip. I enjoy going over the boat with a spokeshave, and then we'll be sanding anyway.

Cutting strips in Hamilton
Hi JNewman, That's funny because the first guy I contacted to cut the strips was a patternmaking shop. They tried but after one cut, gave up. I guess they just didn't have the room they needed, and they were nervous about giving me the consistency I was looking for. I'm still interested though. If y...

Cutting Strips
Hi Guys, Sorry to disappoint, but I just wasn't able to use the skill saw method. I had already set up my forms, and levelled my stronback, and didn't want to have to do that all over again, and I had no other place to try it. Plus, as I mentioned before, my saw isn't in the best shape. I hardly use...

Good Ideas, as Usual
Hi Guys,
This will be our fourth canoe, but these little problems seem to still pop up.
I like that circular saw method. It might be a good reason to go out and buy a new one! I'm so used to using my power mitre saw, I hardly use my circular saw anymore.
Thanks for the ideas guys!
Rob

Cutting strips
Okay, I'm sitting here with my strongback up and my stations in place, all ready to start stripping. I've got 20' long clear cedar planks but I can't find anyone to rip them for me. Does anyone out there have any ideas? I would prefer someone in Hamilton (Ontario) or surrounding area, but I am willi...

strip winner question about your comment
Hi Patrick's Dad,
I'm pretty sure I didn't win, but what did you mean by "the first letter was correct"?

Oops! Forgot something!
I just forgot to mention that I also make sure there is a strap on the front too. I sometimes use one on the back, but rarely. Never had an incident in 25 years. Use good straps!

Car topping two canoes
I car top two canoes all the time. I load my 17' Redbird on first, as normal, and strap it on. Then I load the smaller one on top of it, bottom up as normal, with padding front and rear ends, and in the middle to keep it steady. I put the normal ties around this and then to the rack, pretty well lik...

Attaching inwales
Hi Mike, I had mine clamped into place, dry fit. Then I would release only a section maybe six feet long at a time, obviously starting from one end. As I would apply thickened epoxy I would clamp them up again, but a little looser - tight enough to hold but loose enough so as not to squeeze too much...
