Sorry for the lack of clarity, I was in a hurry. You use these stapled brackets the same as your "L" brackets, instead of clamping, you staple the brackets to the hull to hold your strips in place! They remove easily with a staple puller. I used these on a Wee Lasse years ago, try a few, y...

Hi Kerry
A trick I use, is to take scrap strips, say 3 or 4in long, staple them together to make an" L" . and here's that "S" word again, staple these to the forms while putting pressure on the strip. Works great!

One of the best tips I've picked up lately, was from a first time builder! I had told him to be a little stingy with the wood glue, as this would save scraping and sanding time. He was, with no glue showing inside or out, he was able to skip scraping! The secret! Small glue bottle tip from a hobby st...

I just helped a friend glass a canoe using Raka epoxy. He bought the 350 non blushing hardener. It has a shorter pot life than the System Three Clear coat that I've been using, but it worked out great! We were able to get all the fill coats on, in one day! The 6oz x 60in. cloth was fine, but the 6oz...

Hulls really look nice with a coat of varnish!!!
I see you use US composite epoxy.
How did you like it, and what kind of pot life does it have?
Lastly, is it blush free?
You are really moving along, paddling time is not far off!

Hi Kerry
Just noticed that you did'nt tape your forms.
Maybe, you're not putting glue in that area.

I'm sure you'll come up with a solution for your ends! Years ago I purchased what I thought to be kevlar felt, from a supplier and builder in St. Paul. I found out later that it was merely polyester felt, the kind you can buy at a fabric shop. Anyway, when you think of it, it would build up the area...

Great job Arne!!! I have jusy a few questions. How do you like suspending the hull from the ceiling? No tripping on floor stands! What did you use as the form for your flotation chambers? Lastly, do you hang your seats from the gunnels? You've done a supper job of pictorial progress! Thanks!!! Jim

Stone
Did you baptize your stripper in the Skunk river, Squaw creek, or maybe Lake Laverne?
Coincidently, my first strip canoe plans came from Popular Mechanics, May 1990.
Good to hear of your Iowa ties!

I would give it a light sanding and recoat, not with just one coat, but at least two! The reason is that when you come back to sand, you will be back into the weave again, the extra coat will give you a sanding buffer! What epoxy are you using? I often give my hulls one seal coat ,one wetout coat, a...

Building a canoe, or kayak is like learning to ride a bike!
Once you know how, you just keep riding!
I think I get as much enjoyment out of helping others as I do building my own ! Besides I usually get a chance to paddle another stripper!
Good luck!

I found a simple way to fill staple holes. Traditionally I filled with plastic wood putty, the kind with Acetone, this is still the prettiest. But a quick method is after you roll on yuor first seal coat, wait about and hour or more, depending on your resin, mix up a small batch, say three oz. and w...
