Re: Varnish.....again
"Above the waterline" means that you can't use it on the bottom of a boat stored in the water day and night for a season. All parts of a canoe are "Above the waterline". I can't help you with where to get Captain's Varnish. Sorry. I use a marine varnish from my local hardware sto...

Re: Sona tube for steamin'?
When I made a fishingnet out of ash, I capped a 1" PVC pipe, put the wood in, poured in hot water, and put a cap on the open end to keep the wood from floating out. The next day it easily bent 180 degrees in 8".

Re: need help on applying more than one layer of fiberglass
This is my 2 cents worth. 1. Extra layer of cloth to be 4oz. or ? Use whatever you are using for the rest of the canoe. 2. Extra layer of cloth on all the bottom of the canoe? Yes, I cut out a football shaped piece, then I put the full sized piece on, and glass them together. West soaks through for ...

Re: cleaning dust from hull
getting ready to apply epoxy sealer coat... any good way to remove sawdust dust fines from hull? The rule is to not contaminate the surface. Use a slightly moist, not wet piece of cheesecloth, wipe the shell down, then allow to dry. This way there is nothing foreign on the wood. When I varnish, I m...

Re: Installing outwales
As you probably know, glassing can get messy sometimes. If you want the canoe to be the right shape as you glass the inside, tie a piece of rope/string around the middle tight enough so the canoe is as wide as the thwart will be. This will keep the shape and be moveable should you need to move it.

Re: traction / anti slip additive for inside of hull
A couple of years ago someone suggested sprinkling sugar on the last coat of wet varnish, letting it harden then rinsing off the sugar. It was supposed to leave a rough finish. Has anybody done this and have some results?

Re: Cloth bubbles
Get a large needle syringe. Fill it with epoxy and inject it into the bubble so that as the bubble fills the epoxy stays in the bubble, and the bubble becomes pretty much invisible.. You may have to make the hole slightly larged than the needle to let the air out as you inject the epoxy. You might a...

Re: Suggestions for trimming glass at sheerline?
The way you did it first is the way I have done all of mine, except that I trim flush with the wood. This way there is no sanding and no glass fibers in my eyes or lungs, or on my skin.

Something is wrong. I can do a strip before work, a strip at lunch and a strip after work using Titebond II with no trouble (also stapleless).

In general change all stations equally. But to get the best info call the designer and ask the only person who truely understands the design of the boat what would be best.

Re: Uncured Varnish
Hi Fred, If you used the "Swiffer Mitts" that are made for dusting furniture there may be chemicals on them that are incompatable with varnish. I usually make my own tack cloths out of cheese cloth dipped( then squeezed out) in a 50/50 mixture of my varnish and the recommended solven, that...

Re: repairing a bubble
When I've had bubbles I used #3 and I can't find where the bubbles were. To do the job I got some syringes with needles on them, stuck the needle into the bubble and injected epoxy - the air usually squeezes out around the needle - or you can poke another hole like you suggested. Then you press the ...
