Hi, Ed, I used MAS slow on my two canoes and had very little problem with bubbles at 70 degrees. The canoes were built a year and two years ago. There were obvious bubbles as I spread the epoxy but they came to the surface and either burst spontaneously or were easy to tip out for at least two hours...

I've only built two canoes, both with ash gunwales. There have been several discussions about whether to epoxy gunwales before varnishing. Though it is a personal choice, there is general agreement that ash gunwales will get a black discoloration if they get wet under the varnish. A lot of builders ...

I screwed 2"x2" blocks to the strongback and screwed the forms to the blocks...everything worked OK, but instead of cedar for the blocks, next time I'll use something not quite so soft...?pine. I think it would not be as likely to allow for fore/aft tilting of the stations as the soft ceda...

Just do your best to get tight joints...i know you're going to do that anyway to minimize gap-filling later. Are you going to go stapleless? I think you'll have tighter joints if you do. Staples are faster, but you may not get the joints as tight unless you use a lot of clamps, too. I'm going to try...

I used Titebond II, worked great, easy to use. The problem of squeeze-out is solved by Glen's idea of using a squeeze bottle sold by beauty salon suppliers (ie Sally's) which has a very small hole. Much easier than the syringe method I used on first canoe. Using bead & cove method, I found that ...

I used mahogany (Brazilian) for inner and outer stems. I had a hard time with the steaming process on the first canoe and opted for 1/8" laminations on the second canoe. The thinner laminations bent without any steam or heat, but my stems arent as curved as yours will be. Dry heat works great, ...

Outrigger Saga Continues

Aloha, all, Thought I'd catch y'all up on my second Ulua (an outrigger sailing canoe designed by Gary Dierking) named Huna Kai (Sea Spray). I shipped this one in a crate of 3/8" ply and 2x4 and 2x2 stringers...actually two crates, one for the hull and the other for the iako, amas, paddles, mast...

I went to my local building supply (not the big box stores) and ordered some 16-20 ft. clear WRC for benches I was repairing on my deck. 2x stuff. I think I spent around $400US and it was more that enough to strip a good-sized canoe, very nice wood. I'm sure you can order some from someone in your a...

I was lazy on my first boat and decided to go with a random pattern, not being aware how BIG a difference in color the wet out would make. When I stood back to admire the wetout of the inside, I realized all the dark strips were on one side, giving a striped appearance!!! I was mortified, didn't eve...

I went through so many brushes throwing them away the first time that I started cleaning and reusing on the second one, probably used 1 for every 10 I used on the first one. I also cut the distal 3/8 " off of the chip brushes before use and think the extra stiffness helps. I think 1/2 " is...

I've precoated both of my canoes, using MAS slo epoxy. Plenty of window to time it so you don't have to sand. It does require ~ 8-10 hours to let the first coat cure enough to allow laying the glass on without sticking (at 70F), so I did the precoat on Fri evening, scraped the few drips before going...

Oooops, read more carefully, Kent. You are NOT a Nobody, Glen, You are the MAN! I'm in Kauai again and just got my internet access hooked up, trying to catch up on all the stuff on this and the KBBB. Obviously going too fast so I can get out there and play golf, paddle, and hike in Paradise. Huna Ka...

I used Coma Berenice as recommended by Newfound for its ease of brushing on. A bit pricey, but came out beautiful on my first attempt at this.

That's what I like to see, a man who asks questions and gets answers from a lot of guys who really know what they're talking about....then builds one that nobody suggested. Don't get me wrong, FP, I'll be in your situation in a year and will check out all the postings and then build the one that I l...
