gonna sleep on it...

i'm going to sleep on it, but i think that my plan of attack will be to rip a strip into a little over half of its orignal width with a slight bevel. then plan the fixed strip down to about half it orignal width; also with a slight bevel. (this will equal a whole strip width with cove on top). then ...

another question...

thanks. i have considered this option as well. if it comes to this - making a butt joint - would you recommmend trying to make the lower strip flat (level) and beveling the upper strip with the table saw to match. or bevel the lower with the block plan to meet the angle of the square sided upper str...

removing a strip after glue has set

I glued two strips togather that buckled down the length of the bond, creating a ridge on the outer hull along the bead/ cove joint. this must have been caused by the packing tape contracting as my shop cooled after shutting down for the evening. any way, i have been soaking and heat guning it secti...

The Prospector was launched about 20 minutes ago. My daughter and her boyfriend did a good job building considering that neither of them had ever worked wood before. They milled the strips from rough cedar, did all the bead and cove and made a canoe out of a bunch of "sticks". It has not b...

Thanks guys! We're much more optimistic now. You'll see how we fared once the pics of our finished canoe go up!

Cloth mishap

Hello All, Well, we got the outside of the hull glassed and sanded out really well, considering we've never done this before. Unfortunately, rolling out the cloth to do the inside, we discovered that we were shorted about a yard from our order. We think that we have enough hanging on the sides to pi...

Beware of Chinese made wood screws

Following the directions in Canoecraft, we bought some #6 1 1/4" roundhead woodscrews to attach the outer stems to our Prospector canoe. I predrilled the stems, both inner and outer, full length, for the screws. Six of the sixteen I screwed in snapped at the bottom of the shank where the thread...

Progress report: 6/16/06 We just glassed the exterior yesterday. It was the first time any of us has worked fiberglass and it came out pretty good for a first attempt. The finish as it sits has no runs or thin spots, but does have a wavy surface in places. There is enough resin over the entire hull ...

The only cedar my daughter and her boyfriend could get for their canoe was S1S 3/4" net thickness. After planing, we netted strips 5/8" wide. Station 0 on their Prospector has 94 strips. I'm sure it took more time and most likely added some weight for the extra glue, but we went with what ...

Varnish

Hi everyone, we've been searching for the right marine varnish to finish up our prospector, and saw that Pettit's EasyPoxy Spar Varnish is what's recommended here on the site, but can't find that anywhere. We've found similar Pettit products, and were wondering if anyone had any suggestions for us. ...

Thanks!

Thanks Glen, that's what I was thinking, we've already brought the grain out as best we can, and actually like the look of the holes too. So we're leaving them unfilled, much to my delight! :wink

Gap filling

Does everyone recommend filling all of the staple holes when gap filling prior to initial sanding? I've seen/heard of people doing this, but also not. There are only a few major gaps to be filled on my canoe, and I hate the thought of mixing all of the different colors of epoxy filler I would need t...
