Re: Has anybody tried this idea to help with filling?

Sounds like a great way to clog up your vacuum to me. Whether or not it would help fill gaps and holes, I don't see how you could fill the holes and then stop before filler is drawn through into the vacuum pipes etc.

Re: how long to extend keelband and fixing it to keel less c

If you're not going to have an outside keel, or an inside keelson, you're pretty well limited to ending the brass bang strip at the end of the inner stem. That's how cedar canvas canoes are usually done. Whether or not to put more layers of glass on a hull without an outer stem depends on hull shape...

It looks good! How much weight/ number of people do you need it to carry?

I would think that your only concern would be to match the colour of the strips at the joints so you don't end up with little straight line "slashes" in the finished hull.

Good luck!

Sneakboat

Go to http://www.duckboats.net for much info on boat design, plans, photos, etc.

I agree there are few plans around for strip-built duckboats, but I think its a great building method and many existing plans could be easily adopted.

Good luck

Bob

(I built the boat on Glen Smith's first post)

Canoe finish

Solid painted colour on outside is never "wrong". Use what wood you have/like.

If you are worried about the decks being able to "take it" - the bigger they are the more scratches etc. they will attract and show. Seriously, if weight is a consideration, make them small, if worried about strength, add carry handles or "mini thwarts". If you like the look of l...

Many builders thin the ends of the outer gunnels, say 30" or so - it gives the effect of thinner gunnels but preseves strength in the centre of the canoe.
For most use the amount of water outer gunnels will turn is a non issue.

hole for painter/tie-down

If your deck isn't too long, I'd consider short (handsized) thwarts crossing just a handwidth behind the decks. Good spot for tie down ropes to car top and handy to lift ends of canoe by hand.

Cheers,
