Thanks, guys. Excuse my ignorance, but was the free paint tint you got compatible with epoxy? I ask because the West System tint I bought for an arm and a leg for a half pint had that specially-formulated look, and I don't want to risk messing with the chemistry of my epoxy. I use MAS epoxy, by the ...

Repairing massive delam

I'm repairing a massive delam problem on a fifteen-year-old CLC Patuxent. It delammed probably because I worked the epoxy too much during application, creating air bubbles. :frightened I plan to re-bright the deck with varnish, wait a month, then cover the varnish with clearcoat two-part linear poly...

Greenland paddle making in bulk with router and jig

This blog series on GP-making received a lot of readers over at duckworks, so I figured I'd post it here. It's a six-part series showing a New England paddler using a hand-crafted jig and router to carve a Greenland paddle. She made the jig with wooden dowels and hand-made curved gliding skids, and ...

Anyone eschew decklines?

Many of the wooden kayaks I've seen out here on the east coast , whether strippers or s&g's, don't have decklines, for understandable reasons. I guess builders tend to think decklines make a deck look cluttered. Over the years added decklines to all of my wooden kayaks. I've blogged a five-part ...

building a paddle with carbon fiber

Even with the carbon fiber it was around only $30 or so. Hi Bryan, I searched the forum for a reference to Duane Stokaser who has also developed a method for building paddles with carbon fiber. Nothing showed up. Several months ago I wrote a blog post about his method, including links: http://paddl...

Bright deck, painted hull

There was an article in the "Wooden Boat Edition" of Wavelength Magazine from last winter which specifically addressed the issue of bright finish vs. paint. The author, Adam Bolonsky, was of the opinion that while a bright finish can look nice, a painted hull is more practical and can loo...

Greenland paddling jig/router

So, I went out and tried this out, and it's not a huge time saver and the quality isn't any better than doing it by hand. With more jigs and a set-up like the one in the above link, I can see where it would work very nicely, but for just a few paddles, not worth it unless you like playing with jigs...
