Re: Seat placement on my Freedom 17'9"

Ok, first off I can't believe the conditition the river is in. At the launch instead of there being water across all 300yards of river like in a normal year there's only about 100yards of actual river left! Back to the canoe...we clamped seats in place and I floated it with my friend who weights in ...

Re: Seat placement on my Freedom 17'9"

Hey all...I was hoping someone could weight in on this as I was hoping to install seats tonight. Thanks in advance.

Re: Seat placement on my Freedom 17'9"

Randy, thanks for your thoughtful response. I'm just now getting to mounting the seats after doing some other work. If I look at the plans it says mount the stern seat 65" from the center of the canoe to the back of the seat. That just doesn't look right perhaps because I have large decks (~20&...

Seat placement on my Freedom 17'9"

Hi there. I'm having a hard time getting my head around where I want to mount the seats on my canoe. I've looked at the calculations you're supposed to use and I only get more confused. If someone out there is willing to help here are the details...I'm about 250lbs and my primary paddling partner is...

Sorry, no pics on the blogspot, but I have been slowly sanding smooth the epoxy. I should finish in the next few days and then I'll post some updates. It's a long row to hoe.

I just happened to come by the butternut ($2/BF) from a company that trying to dump it and I was using it for other woodworking projects when it occured to me that it's an viable alternative to cedar. It's a dying species because of a disease or worms (can't remember) so I can't really attest to it'...

check out the blog

Big Woody...per your request I have created a blog. I'll eventually get most of the 100 photos I've taken to document the process posted and I'll keep documenting as I go along.

Update

Put a pre-coat on Saturday. Had a friend come over Sunday (he built the Indienne) so it was nice to have someone with experience helping with the glassing. I ended up having quite a few pinhole bubbles which I lightly sanded out. I added another football layer because I went with light glass on Larr...

nearing the end

I glass this weekend finally (after almost a year of my canoe sitting idle). Although I've heard of people building canoes out of butternut I haven't seen a photo of one yet. Just for sanity sake I laminated a test piece last night and it seemed to go ok. I'll post pics when it gets finished (hopefu...

I just ordered 3.2oz glass from Raka and was told that 1 coat would probably fill the weave. I imagine in your case that 2 would be plenty

Is there a pattern to create your own thwart.

I'm finally to the point where I can start thinking about thwarts. I've already made a carrying yoke and according to Ted I could probably get away with just that, but I'm doing the Freedom 17'9" and I think one more thwart would be prudent. I don't seem to be able to find anything when I searc...

Having done the fishing line method I just want to warn you that if you don't have a helper that it can be a real pain in the butt to loop all that line. All it wants to do is pile up at your feet and knot. Just my experience...perhaps someone has figured out how to do it solo.

Ed, yes I was aware that the old timers created these joints with a chisel. I've made a almost a dozen or so myself which is how I know about my limited ability. Thanks for encouragement and the suggestions on how to make them. I'm concerned more with strength here and if you can make them with butt...

Glen, thanks for the links concerning the caning. I wish I had a dedicated mortiser or even a drill press, then the mortise and tenon joint would be easy. My most accurate tool for joints is my table saw which is why I'd like to try something different. If anyone has tried an alternative and had suc...

Alternate woodworking joint for seats

I'm wondering if any of you have done some other kind of joint for your seats. I can do mortise and tenon joints, but my chisel work on the mortise always leave a little to be desired. How about a lap joint or bridle joint reinforced with dowels? The material I have is ash. Oh yeah, is there a free ...
