I made mine from a piece of old scratched up 3/16" Lexan. Paper used is cut 9x11 sheets spray glued with 3M 77.

This has worked well for me on several buillds now.

Thanks for the reply, Glen.

I've got a couple of good homemade fairing boards so no worries there.

I'll have to pick up a cabinet scraper and get some practice in using it and sharpening it.

Ash accent strip... or not?!

Greetings, I'm getting ready to start laying strips using WRC B&C. I was planning on adding a nice white NWC strip to accent the ash stems and gunwales but I'n thinking how nice it would be to have that ash grain for the decorative strip. I'm not doing my own B&C so I'll have to remove a bea...

Spoken like a true builder! I'm caught up in the solo canoe thing right now and just starting on my Solo 15.... I've had the plans and materials for almost a year now but I have a hard time staying out of my Night Heron! From all I've heard, that Point Bennet is a sweet ride. I'd like to try one of ...

Look like a great boat you have coming together there - my compliments.

I've never had a go at an inlay before but it seems an excellent way to truly individualise one's boat.

Best of luck to you and looking forward to seeing your completed creation.

Drawing Bows

Greetings, I've found these drawing bows to be an excellent addition to my boat building tool collection. Initially picked up the symmetric version when building a Night Heron kayak and I've since purchased the asymmetric style, as well. I really like being able to adjust and lock them into position...

Canoes get more abuse running them up on shore, and portaging and transporting them than they get while actually out on the water.
Amen to that!

I also agree with the one layer wet-out. Experienced builders often have a repertoire of tricks and shortcuts that a rookie might want to avoid until their skill set is up. I'm not aware of any data that supports the premise a 2 layer wet-out is stronger than separate layer wet-outs, as long as the ...

Thanks for the kind words, gentlemen. My kayak is pretty plain when compared to many of the works of art that you guys produce. The beauty of wood though is even a plain jane build is very attractive. Glen, those accent stripes around your kayak cockpit as shown on Nick's site are very nice. My next...

You'll find them at an office supply store/department. They are designed to keep a sheath of papers together. They have a couple of wire wings that open and close the clamp. They're available in different sizes and you'll easily be able to see which size will work best for you. Get a big bag of rubb...

....But a quick method is after you roll on yuor first seal coat, wait about and hour or more, depending on your resin, mix up a small batch, say three oz. and with a small brush, paint over the staple holes! This second coating really fills the holes! Yup, that's how I did the exterior of my kayak...
