The fiberglass cloth I am using is 6 oz. The accent stripe I made consisted of two stripes 16 feet long for the sides and one 4 foot long for the bottom. I used three species of wood, cherry, sassafras and white pine. I made these while I waited on the supplies to arrive. I cut blocks of each specie...

Thanks Glen and Patrick. I have the video that Newfound Woodworks sent. It looks easy, but it has been my experience that most things that look easy usually aren't. I will check out the website and hope for no surprises. I am using MAS epoxies with slow hardener and the best I can do is to warm up m...

Fiberglassing

I should be ready to start the fiberglassing on my Redbird on saturday. If you can think of the most common mistakes, I would love to hear them now. Everything has gone quite well to date and I would hate to ruin it after all this work. Thanks mtpocket http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v507/mtpocket...

I agree with buying the cheap clamps. Using C-clamps with woodworking doesn't require the quality clamp used in working with steel. All that's needed is enough clamping power to hold objects in place. Too much torque and you end up squeezing all the glue or epoxy out. I have some cheap clamps that I...

Thank you for the compliment and for posting my picks for me. I must have missed a step somewhere along the line.

My goal is to have it done by Christmas. The canoe is a Christmas gift to myself and when finnished, the garage space will be a gift to my wife.

Dust Suppression Tip

I build a lot of furniture and have to sand in tight enclosed places quite often. I use a Porter Cable 5" R/O sander. After having the dust collector bump into everything and blowing off and completely covering me with dust, I found a new way to control the dust. I bought a piece of Tygon tubin...

My accent strip is 2-5/8" wide. I built it while waiting on the materials to arrive. Just last night, I installed the strips on my redbird. I had already put on two strips, following the sheer line out to station #5. The strip was very ridgid and a little dificult to seat properly into the cove...

The waterlines I was using were the lines shown on the prints. When I made my molds, I traced everything on the prints using carbon paper. While sighting alongside the stations in a horizontal plane, I could see a difference in the elevation of the lines. Some were only a lines width apart, some wer...

Setting up station molds

After carefully marking and cutting all the stations molds for my Redbird, I was finally able to get started attaching them to my strongback. I have read all the books and the posts in this forum and kept reading about the importance of getting this phase perfectly right. Having been a woodworker fo...

I am building a Redbird canoe. I ordered my materials from Newfound Woodworks. My gunnels are full length cherry. Three points of interest to me; 1. I wanted all the trim to match. 2. I was never discouraged by the supplier from using cherry. 3. The gunnels are not very heavy. In addition to these c...

Thanks for all the encouraging words. I have found this forum to be very helpful and plan to check in daily. No, Steve, I haven't started thinking about my next canoe just yet. I figure I should see how my total occupation of the garage affects my marriage first.

New Redbird Builder

Hello Fellow Forum Members, After reading most of the information in this forum and a few books, I placed an order and recieved it yesterday for a Redbird Canoe. It will be all WRC and Cherry. The accent strip will be made of Cherry, Sassafras and White Pine. I am anxious to get started and even mor...

Bubbles

:?: Due to rising temperatures, bubbles can form in epoxy. With falling temperatures, bubbles aren't a big problem. Has anyone out there tried preheating the hull prior to coating the hull with resin and turning off the heat once it is applied in order to allow the hull to cool down while the resin ...
