I never used spruce because in my area it is only available as construction grade lumber which is often warped or cupped and has too many knots to be feasible.

Randy, do you remember those clamping cauls someone posted for installing decks? I think they were called something like dragon's teeth. Does that ring a bell?

I would use screws only if needed to hold the decks in place until the epoxy has hardened, then remove them. Wax the screws generously and use SS screws so they don't break.
