Yes, I would love to try the M&T joint. I think given the cost of hardwood and my free time that perhaps the lap joint will bring me the highest chance of success.

I'll have updates on my blog and in the Freedom 15' project thread. I just bought some cherry today for the seats and the inwales!

how did you build your seat frames?

How did you build your seat frames? I'm leaning towards butting the frame pieces and joining them with dowels and epoxy. My concern is that all the dowel holes will have to be drilled very carefully, I bet it doesn't take much error to twist the frame. I'd like to hear how you did yours, and if you ...

Tim, I was planning on using the info found in "Building A Strip Canoe" by Gilpatrick. I'll also check out the website you linked to.

Awesome, thanks guys. Juneaudave, I think you have the hole sizing/spacing mixed up for some of the cane sizes. ex, 3.00mm would be 1/4" hole spaced at 3/4"?

Right on Stencil. Although I'm not much of a canoeist, I'm actually from Invermere (for my first 18 years at least). You're absolutely right about high water and bugs!

Bottom of hull didn't hold its shape

While I was scraping the inside of the hull I was running my hands along the outside and noticed that the bottom football portion didn't really hold its shape once removed from the moulds. It's sort dipping in. Granted, a bit of this is probably from my workmanship on the strips when sanding/fairing...

Buying plastic cane

Hi, Any suggestions on where to buy plastic cane in Canada? Canoecraft mentions WH Kilby but their website doesn't say anything about plastic cane (I guess I could phone to confirm). I've also checked out HH Perkins. Is there a preferred width for cane, maybe 3.0mm? I would assume that one of the ha...

Boating Building Blog

Hi everyone, I changed a few things around on my blog and started a new blog for boat building. I'm planning on posting occasional tips, photos, and links that I find on the web. As well, I will be continuing to log the slow process of my own building endeavours (not to be confused with the Bearmoun...

Spreaders are in. I'll double check the fairness later this week to make sure that I don't need more spreaders but this should be good for now.

Ah, thanks. I was planning on using spreaders when I got to the glassing but maybe I should put them in earlier.

A rounded cabinet scraper is maybe a good idea. I used a flat one for lots of the glue removal on the outside, and they are quite inexpensive.

another scraping question

Hi, I did my first bit of scraping on the inside of the hull today. I understand that it is usually preferred to scrape all of the glue off before using the ROS? I'm finding this a bit difficult. I tried to grind a curved edge onto a paint scraper but it's not the easiest thing to do imo. Getting th...

Big day today, I lifted the canoe off of the strongback! I cut a couple of cradles and put them on the strongback, and dropped the canoe back onto the strongback.
