Re: Redbird Mold.

I do now have a recollection of having a pin through station 7 into the end of the inner stem to hold it in place. That would suggest that the stem was a bit higher than your picture suggests. Again, a detailed look at your plans should give some guidance.

Re: Redbird Mold.

Take a good look at your original plans. The top edge of the stem mold should sit below the peak of the station 7 mold a bit. I don't remember exactly how much but your picture doesn't look too far off (you note 1/4" = that seems OK - but your picture appears to be more than that which is a bit...

Re: Redbird Mold.

Looks good. It's pretty easy to glue up the inner and outer stems all in one go. Just be sure to not apply glue to the outside of the outside layer of the inner stem!

You're going to love the Redbird..

Re: WRC Board Estimate

Brian,

It seems he's starting with 23 mm thick boards. The bead and cove will take him to about 19.

Re: WRC Board Estimate

if your boards are 150 mm wide (that's 5.9 inches)... If your strips will be .25 thick (that's a pretty common thickness) and you use a 1/16" wide blade, you should get just 18 strips per board.. Any wider blade and you won't get that many strips. Any knots or waste, and you won't get that many...

Re: 17' 0" Freedom

I wove the seats after 3 coats of Epifanes on the frames and then added 2 more coats across the whole thing (cord and all).

Re: trimming strips to stem

Welcome to the site. The Redbird is a beautiful craft. Don't attempt to cut each strip flush with the inner stem as you build the hull. Just cut them so they are out of the way of your continued build. Only once you have the hull fully stripped, then cut them all flush with the inner stem. This will...

I tried the thin blade on the angle grinder too. I think the oscillating saw works quite a bit better (and less likely to wander quickly).

Re: 17' 0" Freedom

Good question. I have tried a couple different things. I ended using one of those vibrating/oscillating tools. It cuts fairly slowly but gets the job done with a fairly smooth cut.
