I'm no expert ! But I'd guess you contaminated the surface by sanding between coats. How did you remove the dust from sanding ? When I start applying filler coats, I never sand. I wait until the previous coat is real tacky, and apply the next coat. The tackyness keeps the next coat from running. The...

Hi Sluggo

My vote is for equally long. It's really a matter of builders choice !

Hi Robbie
There was some recent discussion on "What glue to use". And I was just wondering, what glue you used to glue up your strips?

I guess in your situation, a waterproof glue may have been a good choice.

I'm sure you can glue and pull your strips together !

Good luck

I glue and screw the inwhales and glue on the outwhales. I used to just screw everything on, but moisture gets between the hull and the trim, and soon you have a squeeky canoe, and rotting trim. When I glue and screw, no screws are visible, and the trim is sealed with the epoxy. I haven't had to rep...

I learned long ago NOT TO USE YELLOW WOOD GLUE ! After you sand, it is difficult to see, as it blends in with cedar, but when you coat with epoxy it comes back to yellow !!! Use a dark wood glue, or a neutral color, I use Elmers, the type that is a gel, It stays where you put it better than others. ...

My experience, is use the best spar varnish I could get ! You've spent alot of time and money, so far, don't drop the ball now !
I use Z-spars Flagship, but have heard good things about Epihanes.

Good Luck !

I've taken lines off two canoes. I know what I came up with was no where near to an exact copy.
I'm really impressed with John's method.
Thanks for posting it Glen !!!

If you are building a 38spl. It's tumblehomed, and putting ribs in might be a trick !

It's really a strength issue !

I really like the 38, and yes, I glass the insides. Some will just do one coat to wet out the cloth, but I like a smooth inside to clean. So I end up with about three coats.

I love your video !
I'm glad to see ingenuity is still alive out there !
Not all of us have deep pockets !
I didn't invent it, but a skillsaw of 13amps or more, with a fence clamped to it. Makes the best thing to cut strips !!!

I haven't seen your canoe but have a few questions. What epoxy did you use ? How long did you mix your resin ? I would time my mixing at about 2 min.and make sure I incorporated everything, from the sides and bottom. did you do this inside ? Was it exposed to a lot of direct sunlite ? A picture is w...

First I'm nowhere near an expert, and a closer look might be helpful ! But judging from the pics, the damage seems so localised, that it appears to be poorly mixed resin. I'm not saying that the whole batch was bad, but maybe just some unmixed resin may have come into contact with the roller, or squ...

I haven't used West epoxy, but If it were me, I'd get more than I needed. To run short would be awful. You can always use the rest later for paddles, repairs, and such. I helped a friend glass a 17ft. canoe, and he ordered a 3gal. kit. from RAKA. He used more than 2 of it. To order more, would've co...
