Re: repairs underway - a cautionary tale
Another trick to closing those gaps you might like to try.. Hot glue clamping blocks equally on both sides of gap all along split. Then fill split with thickened epoxy and clamp gap closed while epoxy sets. After the epoxy has set, simply chisel the blocks off and scrape away excess hot glue. It wou...

Re: repairs underway - a cautionary tale
Don't worry about the ca./ super glue.. I had trouble with building my skiff, scarfing around knots. I tried my regular glue but found that the ca was the best. Quick too. After the boat was finished you couldn't see the glue line at all. As far as filling cracks or gaps use a darker wood flour to t...

Can I take my canoe to Ny?
Hi all. We're planning a trip to the adirondacs next summer and I'm wondering if I can bring my skiff? I realize the some states require registration numbers on canoes. Being from Ontario there's none on mine. I also run a 3hp on the back which also does not require registration here in Ontario. Is ...

Boat was completed for the camping season. First outing the boat was taken to was the annual fishing derby in algonquin park. (This is a fantastic event. Fun for the whole family! The Mnr uses it's boats to take people fishing... free fish lunch. Prizes for the kids They even bring in the float plan...

Re: Rice lake Skiff launched
(Second photo below should have been second photo above.) Then came gunnels... Ash outer with ash inner with scuppers made from cherry. I installed a cherry/birds eye maple and mahogany deck with ash dashboard( It turned out beautiful but added too much weight). Instead of the rear seat being made f...

Rice lake Skiff launched
Edit: I finally joined photobucket so I'm updating my pics.. I finally launched my first cedar strip build. A rice lake skiff. I wanted a boat that I could cartop into algonquin for our family camping trips each summer. I wanted to use an outboad motor and didn't need another canoe (we have a swift ...

Re: Cedar Strip Repair?
As far as staining the wood goes you could let the freshly sanded wood sit in direct sunlight. That will age the wood nicely and you can regulate how much darkness you would like by adjusting the amount of exposure time.. It would be very easy to do a test sample and wet it out with water to see if ...

Re: Here's what I'm building
It looks good! perfect for the trails.. Out of curiosity how thick is that transom? It looks like it's made from the same strips as the hull.

Re: Twisted Stems
Since you have that stem clamped up good and solid why not try using a heat gun to help soften the wood fibres? Make it more pliable and hopefully stay straight when it cools. You have nothing to lose..cf

Re: Pulled staples before fiberglass..How long?
Thanks for your input Randy. The boat has a transom and I had to keep an eye on it as some staples were trying to pull out in that location. I do have some surgical tubing that I bought at Lee Valley. Maybe I'll wrap the boat with that after each sanding session... Cheers, Chris

Pulled staples before fiberglass..How long?
Hi all. I have a question regarding pulling staples to fair the hull on my Rice lake skiff. It's early spring here (Souther Ontario) and I want to start fairing the hull and am wondering what if any damage can be done if I pull the staples to start fairing and maybe wait untill it's warm enough to e...

Thanks for the reply Glen. I just needed some confirmation on my approach. It seemed logical to me. It'supposed to get warmer here next week +12 degc so it's back at it. I have a Q about the keel. In interest of keeping a light weight build do I need an inner keel? I will be running a 3 hp outboard....

Rice lake skiff. Outer stem: Install before or after glass?
I'm sure this has been covered on this and many other forums. I'm wondering what is the best approach for me to attach the outer stem? I'm thinking that I'll install the outer stem before glassing and trim the excess glass flush with outer edge of stem and them glass over the stem with an additional...
