Problems and Questions

Fortunately the builders forum was down for maintenance at about 1 a.m. so I had some time to cool down a little. :frightened It has taken me a very long time to work out the measurements so that I could install the inner gunnel in a way that the scuppers, seats, outwale screws, thwarts and decks ar...

the pleasure factor....

... i forgot to mention this but it seems like a remark that could only be appreciated in this type of forum. So far the only types of wood I've worked with hand tools are cedar, maple, and pine. Pulling the spokeshave across the Maple last night as I shaped the scarf joint, I couldn't find a way to...

decision

I really love the idea of the laminations and creating a design element but 'labor intensive' it would be and the idea of trying to keep the stack in place and smearing epoxy everywhere was a deal breaker. (Also this is my first woodworking project Xavier... and I think this might call for more expe...

.... "a weird bend in the boat"...

... okay, you had me convinced to use the maple after weighing the importance of "looking great" and having "less dings and dents" compared to 'traditional' and 'light'. I do want to keep teh canoe relatively light weight but this is not as important to me as aesthetics and durab...

Hardwood for gunwales

Finished glassing inside the canoe last night and had MUCH better results than I did for the outside. Pretty happy about that part of the job being behind me. I have been calling everywhere trying to find White Ash in a 16' length to use for the gunwales. I was sure I would not have to resort to mak...

Thanks Xavier

I really appreciate the time you took to respond! I think the temperature was a big part of the issue too. Our basement stays around 55 with just the furnace running. I raised it to about 62 (give or take) with two space heaters the night before. However, the viscosity of the epoxy was as you descri...

Temperature and tools

Hi Jim... I had the shop at about 65 degrees when I started... which is as warm as I could get it with two space heaters. It is typically about 55 degrees down there when only the furnace for the house is running. I tried the rollers with no success. A shame too, since I ordered 12 of them. I just c...

Thanks for the encouragement...

I'm so glad this forum is here. The people are SO kind and generous with their experience and support. I hate to be such a girl about it, but I really couldn't mask my disapointment after the glassing was over. I know its not terrible but it seemed "perfect" to my mind before I did the fib...

Just wondering....

The runs I was so stressed about seemed to scrape off very easily with the cabinet scraper. I was just wondering if I should sand the hull with 120 grit and add another layer of epoxy or should I just wait now until it the epoxy resin is fully cured and then sand it for varnishing without adding any...

Well.... its done. I glassed the canoe yesterday. WARNING TO FIRST TIME BOAT BUILDERS ABOUT FIBERGLASS LAYUP: Do not leave your canoe! One of many big mistakes I made during 'glassing was to think that you can take a break in between coats. You might think that you can go have a breakfast or watch a...

Packing tape... I'm a fan

just my 2 cents, but after looking at a LOT of different ways to do without staples, I settled quite comfortably on a combination of "L" brackets at the forms and 3M strapping tape anywhere else. I leave the 1/4" dowels right in the center of the tape and can re-use them sometimes 3 o...

my thoughts on hot glue

um... not sure if I used the wrong kind of hot glue (obviously I guess) but my experience with it was on the forms and the hot glue I used to apply the "optional" station 7 against the stem molds was a big mistake. When I needed to remove it I thought it would just "knock loose"....
