Bryan ... how thick is that slab? It looks thicker than what I used. It's a full 4"! :smile It was much thicker and much cheaper than anything I could find locally. I bought the 4" x 16" x 24" block for $24 (it doesn't appear that he's changed his prices in the last couple of ye...

I'm pretty happy with my version of the sculpted minicell foam seat. I bought my foam from Redfish Kayak. Have a look at their seats: http://www.redfishkayak.com/seats.htm Here are some more seat references: http://www.oneoceankayaks.com/Wshophtm/Shop18.htm These are the instructions I followed: htt...

Wow, how hard does it rain over on your side of the pond? ;) Seriously, I've been out in some pretty hard rains and it takes a long time to amount to much in the canoe. Unless it's really windy, you should be able to put down the paddle once every 20 minutes or half an hour and sponge/bail the botto...

:wink Bosco, don't let Patrick's Dad bug you, he's just offering some good-natured ribbing. "Normal people" can take years to build a canoe or, in my case, a kayak.
I've spent more than the last two weeks just repairing my hatch latches on the kayak!

Well said Alan. My experience has been the same and there are advantages and disadvantages to each. I don't see how a properly applied pre-coat can add any weight.

Juneaudave I have a bone to pick with you! :mad You see, late on Tuesday evening, after looking at your gorgeous teardrop trailer, I started browsing your web pages and then moved on to the T&TTT forum, and then onto the galleries. I lost a good hour and a half, maybe two, of sleep due to your l...

Add me to the tally of those in the Graham and Gidmark camp! Am working on a paddle for my daughter using recycled mahogany and ash. I also have cedar blanks cut out and ready to carve for my younger daughter and maybe a niece. My "voyageur" style paddle from the Graham and Gidmark book wa...

I just checked my blog and it was exactly 2 years ago that I was varnishing my kayak. ( http://pawistik.blogspot.com/2007_04_01_archive.html ) There was a delay of at least a couple of weeks between epoxy and varnish, due in part to the slow pace of my boatbuilding. One reason for someone like me no...

Well it seems to be getting to spring, despite today's cold & wind in this area. You might be itching to paddle the boat. What I've heard of some folks doing is that they don't varnish right away. Rather, they head out and paddle their new boat after that new coat of epoxy has had some time to c...

It's great PR really for LV. Shows they are real people with a sense of humour and generates lots of positive vibes. Not to mention discussions like this one.

Re: Joining Oak for transom

... it will be supporting a 6 to 8hp motor, so roughly 80 pounds on the higher end. I have little actual insight, but just wanted to add the comment that it's not just the weight, it's the torque from the motor that contributes to the issue. Having said that, 1 7/8" oak should be very strong. ...

If it's something that's wide enough to fit another canoe, and if it's a nice job, perhaps you could sell it and build a new one? People pay a fair bit of money for a nice carved yoke, meaning that it may very well be worth your time to make a new one. Just a thought. Or maybe save it for that narro...
