Hey Graham! Also a first time builder here, but just thought I'd share an interesting video by Ted.

I'm doing bead up due to his feedback, but I may be getting myself into trouble! Who knows! haha
Good luck on your build!

Re: stemless
Wow Jim, that most recent photo you posted is a beauty! Great work! A quick question for you: What is the purpose of the flotation chamber? Seems like most canoes float pretty well without them ;) If there is a separate thread describing this, could you help point me in the right direction? Thanks! ...

Re: How to get straight edge for ripping planks?
Hmm.. Seems like Brian is able to view them, as he spotted the Dewalt planer (which is an older DW733). Brian, are you using Google Chrome? My pictures are linked through Google Photos and this may be the reason only some folks can see the pictures. I tried Internet Explorer and Firefox. They both s...

Re: How to get straight edge for ripping planks?
Hey Jim and Brian! Turns out after close inspection of my Western Red Cedar stock, they all (except 1 board) seemed to be quarter sawn. So the faces of the boards already had pretty straight, consistent grain, which means there was no reason to perform the face-to-face glue up. Super happy about tha...

Re: Form placement question
Haha! Thanks Brian and Jim :) I will definitely remember that mistake for next time. (Hopefully there is a canoe #2 at some point in the future). It's been a great amount of fun working on it, and I'm finally getting to the stage of applying strips! So much prep work and it feels nice to finally be ...

Re: Form placement question
Hey Brian,
Correct, all forms are technically ~0.5" away from their intended position. I will probably take this as a learning lesson and soldier on, haha. Thank you for your input.

Re: Form placement question
Was browsing the forum and thought I'd give this a read. Made me realize I set up my forms on the opposite side of the line on accident.. ugh.. Any of the experienced guys have concerns about this mistake? Or will the canoe still paddle and feel fine? I'd hate to redo my planking progress, but if it...

Re: How to get straight edge for ripping planks?
Hi Brian. I'm coming up on the face-to-face glue up. However, I'm very skeptical about the potential results. I am having a tough time thinking of any method that applies a strong enough pressure for gluing, and I'm almost positive I'll get gaps after it's done. Have you done this kind of face gluin...

Re: How to get straight edge for ripping planks?
Okay, I understand the meaning by "sacrificial strip" now :) Thanks for clearing that up! I wasn't even considering using the saw as a way to get a clean edge. That's much better than the jointer! Update: just purchased all of the trim wood last night! A bunch of clear Ash and Walnut. My f...

Re: How to get straight edge for ripping planks?
Thanks Brian, that's exciting to hear! I just picked up several hundred pounds of brick (for free!) this morning, which will help out with the face glue-up :) But my original question still stands: How do I go about getting a straight edge to use as a reference for ripping the boards? I'm thinking a...

Re: How to get straight edge for ripping planks?
Brian, ya I have been a tad concerned about getting a perfect glue-up without gaps. I'm still convinced I'd like to give this method a shot, and I'll deal with any mistakes that I make haha! The info you shared about the solids is really interesting, thanks for that. I'll be picking up a couple roll...

Re: How to get straight edge for ripping planks?
Hi guys! Thank you so much for your input! Brian, I had never considered this before and it looks like it will yield enough strips for my canoe build! This is a great solution as it gives 3/4" strips and presents the edge-grain instead of face-grain. Here are my quick calculations below: - 15 b...

Re: How to get straight edge for ripping planks?
Thanks you so much for the replies! Jim, all of my boards are currently 7/16" to 1/2" thick (rough both sides). This means I have to plane them down anyways and I may end up with 3/8" thick stock max. This begs the question, do I plane down another 1/8" and rip 3/4" strips (...

How to get straight edge for ripping planks?
Hey there! I am a fairly new member, but a frequent reader of the threads on this forum. What an awesome resource! Anyhow, I am getting ready to machine my strips. I purchased my boards from a farmer's barn near Lawrence, KS. It was the weirdest place to find clear Western Red Cedar, but it's nice s...

Re: Interpretation @ 1 1/2 in revised Ranger offsets
YES! Thank you Stephen, this is exactly what I was looking for. They must have forgotten to include the corrections, because the 2016 edition also has a couple incorrect tables for stem offsets. I have notified Joan about it and she said she would speak with Ted. Again, thank you very much. It seeme...
