Kent, This has surely been a hell of a year for you. First the loss of your beautiful outrigger, and then the loss of your daughter! I just came upon this posting: I usually only go to the builders forum. I am so sorry for your loss(es). I have not been blessed with chldren of my own, and cannot ima...

Mike, I'd just tape up from where you are now. If what you have glued up so far does stick, just leave the molds where they are and disconnect them from the strongback when you flip the boat. Then you can see what's happening as you will be able to look down into the stems. Use a fine say (like a ka...

Wayne, I would think seriously about the wax. Unless this canoe is going on the wall, it's going to be dragged, dropped, scraped on the beach, over rocks; well, you get the idea. You will be re-varnishing, and if you are like me, repairing scrapes and dings with new fiberglass and resin. The wax is ...

I started this new path in my life (building and paddling strip canoes) by buying Gilpatrick's book, which recommends two layers of cloth at once being wet out. I do believe that his is a more utilitarian approach to canoe building, the idea being to build a strong boat that you can use, not so focu...

Geordie, There is a review of router tables in the new Fine Woodworking. I agree with Rod: a good fence is VERY important to your final product. The insert (the usually clear piece that you affix the router to) is also important. If it sags even a 1/32" it can ruin a project. Use thick plexigla...

Tim, I hope your post was regarding shontsea's post and not mine. It seems like he's got a little energy going there... :embarassed I did rolling bevel on my first canoe, mostly because I love hand planes and secondly because I really didn't have almost $100 bucks for a set (that's what they were a ...

To pick up a couple of the questions: One question about bucking, was that caused by the fishing line or the strapping tape? If tape, wouldn't that be resolved by taping closer to station molds? How are you securing the tape? Just wrap it around and stick it to itself? The buckling is caused by too ...

Here is a link to my set of pictures and my first experience with the fishing line method:

I made prodigious use of 2" clear packing tape as well. Be careful not to apply too much force and buckle the strips. I did this in a few places.

Here is the email I got from Bill at MLCS: Thank you for your e-mail below. I was very impressed with the pictures from the link below. You definately built an impressive looking cedar strip canoe. I have good news. I decided to add the 5/16" flute and bead set to the MLCS product line. The 1/4...

Well Sedges, you certainly set me to thinking. Should I put a football in the inside too? I think I was a little too stingy with the resin last time out. I used barely over a gallon of resin for an 18 1/2 foot boat. I never did get to weigh her but I could easily pick her up over my head with one ha...

Three coats and counting! I rolled on the two filler coats after fairing in the stem wrap-arounds. I haven't rolled before. It is a quick way of getting epoxy to the sides and not messy, but it seems to leave the epoxy a little "pocked" in spots. I smoothed everything out last night about ...

My 18 1/2 foot White oilcanned pretty heavily, though it didn't seem to affect the seals or the glass, which seemed to allow the flex. The Guide is flat bottomed, and wide, which may contribute to this. I had a football and full coverage layer outside and a layer inside of RAKA 5 0z (they don't sell...

Chris, Welcome to the Forum. I would suggest that you find a table saw and put together a gang rip set-up: unless you really like pushing boards thru a bandsaw. A little math: If your distance around the boat at the center is 50" (mine was 60" for a 20 foot White Guide) you will need at le...
