Fairing outer stems

Hello all, i am in the process of fairing my outer stems, and i think i am being to cautious. i have faired the bottom by using a batton as described in canoecraft. however the keel line on the freedom is quite flat. so the bottom of my stem has a portion of the outside lamination to the midpoint fr...

Fitting outer stem

I am a little confused about fitting the outer stems. the front face of the inner stems have the cedar cut flush, then somewhere at the turn as it rounds to the bottom of the boat, do you cut into the cedar to make like a trough for the outer stem? and the outer stem should be cut 1" shorter th...

Epoxy question - from first timer!!

As i read, i hear "epoxy" used when discussing attaching the outer stems, seats, etc... Do i take this to mean the same two part expoxy used for wetting the glass? If so, would the epoxy supplied for the kit, include enough for all of this as well as all that is required for glassing the h...

alternatives to brass stem band ?

would it be as functional, and how would it look to add an extra layer of fibreglass and epoxy to the ends of the boat, just like skid plates on a kevelar boat? are there other techniques or alternatives to brass stem bands?

thanks!

cutting molds

hi all, i am cutting my molds tomorow night, and i have a question. when i was into canadian canoes, i noticed that the molds were not only cut out to shape, but the edge of the mold, where the planking will attach had an angle to it. when i read canoe craft, it doesnt mention this angled edge. is t...

cherry gunwales, how much extra weight does this add?

every time i mention that i would like ot do cherry gunwales and decks people jump about the weight. how much could this really add over ash gunwales? a pound or two? is that really a big deal? not to me, but could it be a much larger difference?

(i am talking for a 17' freedom!)

thanks, that was just what i was looking for. One more question (ya right, ONE more!!) some boats seem to turn out with a really buttery colour, like the ones on the cover of canoecraft. then i see some much more redish looking boats, darker in colour. since the woods i will be looking at are obviou...
