Re: kayak cockpit cover
I took my kayak to a nearby outdoor store that sells kayaks and assorted related equipment and was able to test fit till I found one that fit fine.

Re: Varnish Brand
I have used Pettit's Flagship varnish for the last couple of years and it brushes on fine. does not need as much thinning as the other.

Re: Sanding out epoxy patches
If you don't sand them out they will show as a blotch. Also try using a scraper to remove the excess and sanding after. If you have small areas to fill before glassing what we do in class is masking tape the area as close to the gap as possible, fill it, remove the tape, smooth with a clean white cl...

Re: Tapered Inwales
start your clamping in the centre and work out to both ends. I find clamping every 6 inches or so seems to work the best to hold the outwale in place. You may need clamping blocks on the inside to prevent marring of the inwales

Re: Inside hull finishing question
try mixing up a batch of coloured thicked epoxy and use a plastic glue syringe with the dispensing end cut almost big enough for your fillet. I tried a plastic bag with the end cut out but found it too messy. Another thing I used for a fillet in a kayak along the sheer clamp was a stick cut narrower...

Re: Fiberglass frustration
looks like off gassing overnight created the bubbles. You need to babysit it for a few hours after finishing to press out the bubbles that may form. You could try drilling small holes in each end of the bubble and injecting mixed epoxy into the air space till it flows out the opposite hole. I got ab...

Re: Tapered Inwales
taper the side that attaches to the hull. you may need to plane it smooth where the taper ends. use a straight edge to ensure you have a smooth line. ie no bump where the taper ends

Re: Seat Positions
Hanging the seat with a 10 inch clearance under the seat should give you enough room if you are kneeling. If you intend to sit all the time you might want it a bit lower. I use ash inwales so I am not sure how yours would hold up. Be sure to drill closer to the hull than the inside edge of the inwal...

Re: Trimming at shear line Tips
DSC03118 (Large).JPG DSC03119 (Large).JPG you are likely past this step but as I mentioned earlier I cut the sheer line with a knife. When installing the inwales I push the inwale down slightly leaving some of the hull proud and sand it flush to the inwale. I added a few pics from my work today as ...

Re: Fairing Compound.
It is safe to use fairing compound and some sanding dust to darken the mix. I would suggest aiming for at least a couple of shades darker than the are you are filling. A really light fill looks like fill whereas a darker patch seems to blend in better.

Re: Installing Outside Stem
I think the question still is, and pardon us if we are wrong but you did mix the resin and hardener together and then applied it , first clear, to let it soak into the cedar planking and inner stem and then added thicked mixed epoxy and fasten the outer stem in. I use parraffined metal screws to att...

Re: Trimming at shear line Tips
If you have a pattern already made up and it is for a symetrical boat ie a Ranger or something like that I would draw your pattern on the hull with a pen and cut it carefully with a shop knife. Repeated shallow draws along the line with the knife will cut it nice and smooth. Start at the outer stem ...
