Re: Ranger Progress
Jim, If I understand your process correctly (one full strip with pieces glued to it), the accent will be visible only on the outside, is that correct? I assume you start with a thinner strip? Or did you mean that you start with one full 'normal' strip and glue the accent pieces for the next strip to...

Re: Ranger Progress
Good progress indeed. It's not about how fast your but how much you enjoy the build. Take your time. As for tape, I use that tin (3/4" wide) packing tape with the threads in it. It's incredibly strong and you can put plenty of tension in it to hold a strip to the previous one. Your build is loo...

Re: Bookmatching the bottom of the Redbird.
The outer stem should be 3/8" wide (port to starboard) at the keel end of the stem. It will be 3/4" thick initially and will sit into the mortise you cut which is just deep enough to reach the inner stem. Once it's all glued in place, you will shape the outer stem so it is fair with the re...

Re: Bookmatching the bottom of the Redbird.
Your description is correct. Use thickened epoxy to glue your outer stem in place. But first apply a layer of unthickened (but catalyzed) epoxy to the joining surfaces, let it soak in a bit and then wipe off excess before proceeding with the thickened epoxy. Note that the inner side of the outer ste...

Looking at your picture, I think I'd stop there and go with the next coats.

Re: Strip size
I've been to the Spooner canoe museum several times. It really is well done. And I agree that shop there is awesome! I displayed a couple of my canoes there at the late May event in 2018 (I think). Really enjoyed visiting with people there.

Re: Sanding varnish
I had the first canoe I built clearcoated. It looks awesome. scratches just as easily as anything else and isn't easily "touched-up" as varnish but your approach of periodically clearcoating makes the touch-up problem moot. As for posting a picture. Look at the series of icons above your w...

Re: Inwale screws
I would not use galvanized screws. Silicon bronze are common. Drilled and countersunk to avoid high torque situations. I however have never screwed my gunwales in place. I apply them with thickened epoxy only. If you have plans on removing your gunwales, screws is the way to go but if you don't inte...

Re: Carving the Redbird Stem
I suggest you carve a section at a time and start at the sheerline (rather than the end you have started on. Carve enough of the stem to allow you to apply the first few strips. Carve a bit ahead of your stripping process. This way you will be more confident that you have the bevel just right. A tri...

Re: 17' 0" Freedom
It will definitely get up North this summer. Debating routes now. Thinking either a Quetico Ely to Atikoken and back trip (160 miles) or Ely to Grand Portage (120 miles) along the US/CA border (it's that 8 mile Grand Portage that drove me as I built this boat). Today is opening day for BWCAW permits!

Re: Redbird Mold.
I recommend you determine which mold(s) is(are) incorrect and fix it(them) only, rather than make adjustments to multiple stations to correct the problem.
