"Flitches" are a common name for how veneers are cut and stacked, and like Glen said, are sequential or book-matched. If you took the time like some of the builders on the forum do to mark and stack each cut as it comes off the saw, you would have a "flitch-matched" canoe. It wou...

Glen, thanks for the encouragement. This is my second boat. I think having it only about 65 or so in the shop helped slow the cure time down a bit. I can't wait to get this girl in the water, but it looks like I'll have to be wearing a wetsuit when I do!

Fiberglass at LAST!!

Hello all, Been a crazy summer of work and travel, and not much progress on the 20 foot White. Last night as the snow fell gently on the hills above Eureka, MT, epoxy resin and glass cloth became one with cedar strips. I was very nervous about glassing this beast alone, but it worked out OK, I think...

Bryan, It's not so much an eddie force as once the bow draw begins, the current, which is still pushing straight at the far bank, now has the boat at an angle aproaching broadside and it wants to just slam the boat into the far bank. We're talking about a river less than 15' or 20' wide, so the back...

Richard, I agree 100%! I started a few years ago with only Gilpatrick's book (which is very good) but stumbled on to Bear Mountain and it has made everything so much better. This boat will be getting scuppered gunwhales, used flute and cove, no staples, and lots of other great time-saving and beauty...

Bryan, This example is from my last canoe, an 18.5 White guide, but I'm anticipating much the same issue with the 20 footer. I realized that I had done my force arrows wrong in steps 1 and 2 so I re-submitted the drawing after I corrected it. The issue here is that it is tough to keep from slamming ...

Hi all, Well, I wanted to get this forum started and here it is weeks later and I'm doing my first post. Been travelling and trying to inlay an eagle in the bow of the 20' White. So here's my dilema: I live in the Rockies, where rivers are small and fast flowing. I often have to get the canoe turned...

RR, Just wanted to express my condolences about your loss of the boat. You seem to be taking it extremely well. Did you use clamps or fishing line to hold your strips? How did it go for you? On your glass/thickness issue, I think that some sanding to get a smooth transition line or filling in like K...

Erik, Don't have any plans to send you as all my stuff is in boxes right now, but wanted to just write in for moral support. I went through a Divorce/Bankruptcy/Forclosure about 8 years ago. It was tough, but there is a life after. Try to hang in there and yes woodworking is great therapy. Fair Wind...

Algonquin, Boy, would I like to do this for a living too. Here in the Flathead valley there are two full time Strippers: Heritage Canoes and Morely's Canoes. Greg Morely is actually in the Swan Valley, but close enough. The guy who owns Heritage works out of his garage, and gets between 10 and 20 k ...

Ron,
What a pretty boat! You did a very nice job!! :applause

Hope you enjoy her for years to come. Since you have a picture of another paddler on your website, I guess you'll be building another one soon?

Mike,
What a beautiful job! How does she track? I think the accent inlays you did are awesome. :applause

It looks like you are really getting some deflection on that paddle!
