Well I guess this could be added onto this as it definatly fits the title of this one. I went to fitting the inner gunnels yesterday and ran inot a problem. Dunno if I can explain this really good or not but I'll try. The decks curve from center of the boat out to the sides, high to low, kinda lik e...

Just an update. After a lot of thinking, tinkering, drawing, tinkering, and just plum being lost. I decided I'd be better served by putting a yakama rack on my pickup. Just couldnt bring myself to do it. Even thought about the drill through the steam deal, but on my boat I just dont think it's feasa...

well I thinks I've figured it out. Took a forstner bit, drilled a hole till the point just poked through. Inserted dowel. Marked while spinning the dowel in the block essentially making a O on the bottom which was small enough to mark center with the drill bits. Started small, and worked up to a 3/8...

Tim, That is what the painters hole was for. My concern about using a scupper to tie too is they are cedar and the outer portion of the inner is ash. I could go back and redo the inner gunnel, re glue things up and start it over, that is an option though I'd prefer NOT to do it, I may. The other rea...

a simple wood working folly that has been a problem before..

So, I'm trying to get setup for the painters hole. Tried making caps and gluing them together, worked great, well kinda. Used a 1" hole saw, stacked and glued...went to nock them down with sandpaper on a dowel in my drill press and the heat had the glue go soft, ugg. So, bought a bunch of diffe...

man alive, this stinks in more ways then one. Boy the decks cleaned up sharp with a belt sander. Got to fitting. Well the deck was kinda ackward at first, and I dropped it a few times while trying to mark it to fit. Basically I'm fitting it totally by a nicholson rasp. Just leary of using power tool...

Thanks Glenn,

I was thinking more of a reuglar style, but you know I could make a kind of carry yoke back rest thwart all i one, have a hook to her. Ah heck, if I do that I wont have enough good ash left for a pair of snowshoes for my buddy. Reckon I'll stick with something simple.

well went back and read the book, oops dunno how I missed the 7/8 to 1" remark. Oh well, no harm no foul. Instead of trying to fix these, I'd rather just rebuild. I'm hoping I have enough walnut for this job, I might, might not not sure. I changed my wood scheme. Sapele on the outside, with pou...

I'm not sure about these board buddies, but I used feather boards. With the right sized infeed and outfeed tables you can run just one feather board and use a push stick just fine. It'll keep the board tight to the fence, and the infeed and outfeeds will keep it from bowing up. and it's quicker then...

so, what you are telling me is what I was thinking. We went way to thin on them. they are 1/2" right now after we planed the maple down. Really nice figure too it too, what a shame.

Deck fitting, hard upsweep and tumble home

Ok so I decided on doing a flush deck. Built some decks yesterday. The fella at the woodshop on base talked me out of going to 3/4" instead we went to 1/2" thickness. Outsides are figured maple, center is blood wood with a strip of porvian walnut between. Looks nice. Till I started sawing ...
