Jamestown fiberglass cloth

In the past I've always used Episize 6oz. cloth. My local retailer sells a 60 inch wide by 10 yards long roll for around $140.00. I noticed in a sale catalog from Jamestown a roll of 6oz., 50 inches wide, and 10 yds. long for $56.76. Has anybody used this cloth? Hard to believe there could be such a...

Jim, Like Glen I also use a utility knife to cut my sheer. Don't try to do it in one pass. Go over the line 4 or 5 times. On another forum someone suggested using what I think is a fairly new tool on the market that has a small spinning bit in it. This tool is used by drywallers I think to cut out o...

Chris, I've always let gravity determine where my first strip lands on the molds. I attach the strip at the sheer line on the middle station and the two stations on each side of the center station. Then working out to the bow and then the stern temporary attach this strip where it falls on the mold....

Randy, Thanks for your interest in my accent strip. I have no idea how to post pics on this forum. I did write down your email address and will send you a pic when the strip is finished.

Gentlemen, Thanks for the good advice! I was afraid those 3 strips might be too stiff. I've got 60 some spring clamps so I'll use Bud's suggestion and install the accent strip directly to the third strip on the mold. I probably should do a dry run first to make sure those 4 and 8 inch pieces line up...

accent strip

I'm ready to start planking a Bob's Special with 1/4 X 3/4 very light colored WRC. The accent strip I want to create will be 8" lengths of dark WRC alternated with 4" lengths of light colored WRC like I'm using for the rest of the planking. I would like to assemble and glue this strip on a...

Dan, Thought I would suggest another option for a strongback. Build a box with (2) 1X8X16' and (2) 2X4X16'. I've was able to find the 1X8 in common pine and the 2X4 were common building material. I screwed the 1X8 about every 12 inches into the edges of the 2X4, fliped it over and attached the other...

An electric Wagner wallpaper steamer is an excellent source of steam, about $30.00 at HD. My unit will run for about 2 hours on a full tank of water. A few plumbing parts, 2 hose clamps, and a short section of heater hose connects this to a 5 foot long box made out of 1X8 pine. 1/2 inch dowel rods t...

Rather than a syringe have any of you used an older style squeeze ketchup bottle like the ones you used to see in restraunts? I've found this the best method to get a fine bead of Titebond in the cove edge of my strips. They hold alot of glue, clean up easy with soap and water, are cheap, and reusea...

Tom, I have not tried a motor on my wherry. Beefing the transom up to one inch I think the boat could handle a 3 or 4 hp outboard. If Dave is using 1 1/2 in. solid mahogany I'm sure that boat would handle more power. If your deciding between a Cosine Wherry and a Rice Lake I would go with the Rice L...

Gentlemen, Both Rice Lakes look great. I built a Cosine Wherry last winter which is very similiar to the Rice Lake, except the stern. I'd be interested in knowing how you're building the transom. The Wherry I built called for 1/2 inch marine plywood which I thought was too whimpy. I ended up laminat...

Dave, I found that getting the ends of my strippers the most challenging part of the building process, especially a Hiawatha canoe that has a high recurve. After giving it your best shot and you're really not happy with the results you can always laminate 1/4 " strips over the entire area then ...
