Re: Need a double check

Both Brass Stem Bands are in place. I appreciate all the advice.

Now how do I keep the epoxy off the flat surface for the stem band when I fiberglass ?

Re: Need a double check

The brass stem band is 3/8" wide. I can plane the outer stem so it's 3/8" wide now but the fiberglass will make this wider once it's applied won't it? I'm not sure how much thickness the fiberglass/epoxy will add to the hull/stem. Not sure if I'm expressing my question adequately or not.

Need a double check

Want someone to validate this plan for me. I'm getting ready to fiberglass it on Wednesday and want to validate this plan. I have decided to use the brass stem bands I have after all. Currently, my outer stems are faired with the hull and the leading edge is narrower than the brass stem band. I'm th...

Re: Portable Table Saws

I would suggest you get a track saw instead if you want it mobile and usable on the job site.

Re: Shaping the outer stem

OK, I'm skipping the brass stem bands. I like the wood look too much. It's coming along nicely and I got the 2nd outer stem glued on tonight. http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k154/wb9tpg/Canoe%20build%20a%20long/DSC02098.jpg I love the Japanese saw rasp http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k154/wb9tpg...

Shaping the outer stem

I'm shaping the outer stems now. How much should I round over the leading edge of the outer stem? I do have a brass stem bands but I'm thinking I may not use them cause I like the look of the wood better without it.

Re: Closing the football question

I tried the two strip approach. I planed the cove off the third strip as designed but could not get the third strip to fit into place during glue up. I could not bend it enough to get it in and the glue was setting up!! Light bulb idea moment! I ended up cutting the strip into two pieces before the ...

Re: Stem material dimension

It matters, you'll end up having to plane material off the molds when you shape the stems. I used 5/8 material and still hit the molds in a couple of spots. I'd do 1/2 the next canoe. As for the 3/4" width, you'll never get all the laminations perfectly aligned so the extra 1/8 give you some ro...

Re: Closing the football question

Yes, what I'm referring to. I'm concerned that that a 2 strip assembly will only be 1.25 strips wide when I cut it down to fit. I was wondering if I should glue 3 strips together instead which will be 2.25 strips wide after it's fit. Maybe I'm fretting over nothing. Here is where I'm at right now. h...

Closing the football question

At station 0 the center strip is only be 1/4" wide. Should I make the final assembly to insert with that 1/4" wide strip and one more strip or should I add 2 more strips. I'm thinking 2 additional strips but I wanted to solicit opinions. It seems it would hold the curve better that way. :?
