Looking forward to how you like working with the 3/16" strips !
I've been contemplating, going that route awhile.
Need to latch on to some bits !

Re: B & C on 3/16 in strips
A trick I've used since day one Bead and Coving strips, was to run my strips BETWEEN the bit and fence. If you have any variation in the width of your strips? Set the gap between the bit and fence. The first pass will make them the same. Very important if you want the strips to mate up on the ends. ...

Re: 3/4 stock for stations
I've always used 3/4" ply. Gives more surface to hold staples. Seems to warp less in time. A 1/4" additional thickness doesn't need repositioning of the forms. I slightly radius to leading edge.of the forms and double tape, so the forms don't dent the inside of the strips. This will save s...

Re: gunwales epoxy or varnish
When I do the gunnels, I usually swing the boat "right side up", looks like it would be a bit inconvenient trying to work on the inside part of the gunnel with those Jim. A bit of tape and a few garbage bags and the hull is well protected and doing the gunnels is a much better (from a vis...

Re: gunwales epoxy or varnish
Here is a trick for preventing varnish, or epoxy running down the sides of your hull , when coating the gunnels. This easy to make stand is effective. I hope a pic says more than my slow typing can ! https://hosting.photobucket.com/albums/y390/JimDodd/IMG_3349_zps5rnvkrgc.jpg https://hosting.photobu...

Re: Varnishing after sanding fiberglass
Some epoxies still have the Amine blush.
I use RAKA's resin, and 350 non blush hardener. I've never washed or had any problems with varnish.

Re: Follow along as I build my first canoe
Curious to why you stopped stripping on the one side ?
I keep stripping both sides, up to the point of covering the Stem forms.
Then strip one side to the centerline.

Don't get me wrong ! I'm a big fan of Tumblehome. Just not the Shouldered variety.

Re: How do you like your Freedom Solo?
As a beginner, I'd stick with the Merlin.
The Freedom Solo is more of a challenge to build, and I don't find the shouldered tumblehome a significant advantage to paddle.
They look cool, but that's about it, from My perspective .

Re: Nokomis
Sorry I missed your post earlier. Yes, you can bead and cove 3/16" strips with the 1/4" bits by centering them on the bits. As for bead and coving. The 3/16" ( 3/32" Radius) ? Bits are out there, if your router can handle 1/2" shanked bits. They are more expensive, but I'm t...

Re: B & C on 3/16 in strips
I believe Nick Schade did a kayak with the thinner strips bead and coved.
I think he listed the source for the smaller radius bits.

Way to go Stu !
You have the critical part done ! The rest can wait a year if you can ?
Me ? I would play Hookie ! I would have a hard time studying knowing that canoe was waiting to be finished ! !
Seriously ! Have a good year at School !
Again nice job !

Re: First Build Questions
First off your canoe looks great Stu ! I've always used the outside of the hull. to lay and trim the cloth for the inside. Just make sure canoe is clean and not dusty. I trim a couple inches long. Roll it up . Flip the hull. and unroll the cloth on the inside. Everyone has their own method. I glass ...
